Premios Princesa de Asturias 10/09/2018

The Princess of Asturias Foundation will calculate and compensate the carbon footprint generated by its activities

ECODES has awarded the ZeroCO2 emissions eco-label to the 2018 Princess of Asturias Awards.

The EDP Foundation will provide four electric and two hybrid vehicles for staff during Awards Week.

The Princess of Asturias Foundation reaffirms the commitment it made in 2011 to reduce the environmental impact of its activities. To this end, the Foundation is working with the Ecology and Development Foundation (ECODES) to offset the carbon footprint resulting from the activities carried out during the Princess of Asturias Awards Week. This commitment has resulted in the Princess of Asturias Awards once again being awarded the ZeroCO2 emissions eco-label, which is granted to businesses and organisations that offset their environmental impact, a label the Foundation has held since 2012.

Between 2011 and 2017, the Foundation managed to reduce the indicators of CO2 emissions by 41% (from 36.12kg/attendee in 2011 to 21.20kg/attendee in 2017), despite an increase in overall emissions as a consequence of an increased number of attendees and activities carried out during Awards Week.

It is also worth highlighting the reduction in emissions from the use of paper (two tonnes) and that the use of recycled paper has tripled. There has also been a significant increase in emissions from buses and trains, which reflects more frequent use of public transport, which is more efficient in terms of environmental impact.

The Foundation will compensate its carbon footprint through a project called “Small and Micro Hydroelectric Power Stations,” which allows rural and mountainous zones of South-eastern China to produce emission-free energy. The power stations use natural waterfalls, not dams, to generate sustainable energy.

Via the ZeroCO2 emissions eco-label and programme, ECODES enables Spanish companies and organisations to offset their carbon footprints. The compensation consists of a voluntary monetary contribution for each tonne of CO2 generated by a project, which is used to avoid or capture the same amount of CO2 in a developing country.

Electric cars

In addition to the carbon offset, the Princess of Asturias Foundation’s environmental commitment includes reducing its carbon footprint. Accordingly, this year it will have the use of four electric vehicles and two hybrid vehicles (electric and gasoline) on loan from the EDP Foundation, which will be used for staff to travel around the city of Oviedo.

EDP, the main shareholder of the Hidroeléctrica del Cantábrico electric company, forms part of the Foundation’s Princess of Asturias Board of Trustees.
