Orchestra conductor Aarón Zapico to give a lecture at the Princess of Asturias Foundation's 2019 International Music School Summer Courses

Orchestra conductor and founder of the Forma Antiqva ensemble Aarón Zapico will give a lecture at the 2019 Summer Courses, organized by the Princess of Asturias Foundation’s International Music School. The event will take place on 25th July in Oviedo. Being a curricular activity, admission will be restricted to students enrolled on the courses and teachers.
The following figures have participated in the courses in previous years: Fernando Argenta, host of the music programmes “Clásicos Populares” and “El Conciertazo”, singers Luz Casal, Jorge Ruiz of the pop group “Maldita Nerea” and Victor Manuel, Galician musician Carlos Nuñez, producer and musician Carlos Jean, Lebanese violinist Ara Malikian, cellist Asier Polo, the creator of the flamenco violin, Paco Montalvo, and stage director Emilio Sagi.
Registration for the International Music School’s Summer Courses opened on 25th April. The courses will be imparted at the Eduardo Martinez Torner Advanced Conservatory of Music and the Prince Felipe Auditorium in Oviedo between 18th and 27th July. Students can register via the school’s website: www.escuelainternacionaldemusica.org/en . The deadline for registration is 5th July. The number of available places is limited.
Classes will be taught by a distinguished international teaching staff that includes among its guest professors musicians from centres such as the Brooklyn College, New York City University, the Raanana Music Center, Israel, the University of Maryland School of Music (USA), and the Madrid Royal Conservatory; or belonging to ensembles such as the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra (USA) or the Spanish Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra; as well as directors and assistant directors of music from the Teatro de la Zarzuela, Madrid, and the Moscow Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra.
Twenty-two teachers from seven different countries (Armenia, Israel, the Netherlands, Russia, Spain, Ukraine and the USA) will impart instrument classes, covering the disciplines of keyboards, string and woodwind; musical ensemble classes, with subjects covering orchestra, chamber music, string quartet, wind ensembles, jazz, free improvisation, lied and four-hand piano; and theoretical-practical classes, including orchestra conducting, musical composition and voice. The departments of musical health will also hold workshops.
With the aim of bringing classical music to all audiences in a different way, the school will once again continue its “Micro-concerts” in the cathedral square, as well as its “Music on Wheels” concert cycle. The latter consists of outdoor concerts at emblematic spots around the city with a vintage van providing support.
The artistic director of the Summer Courses, Yuri Nasushkin, is a professor at the Eduardo Martínez Torner Advanced Conservatory of Music of the Principality of Asturias and has conducted the Principality of Asturias Youth Symphony Orchestra (JOSPA) and the Community of Madrid Youth Orchestra.
Aarón Zapico
Orchestra conductor and founder of the Forma Antiqva ensemble, he has performed regularly at major festivals and venues leading symphony orchestras, specialized ensembles and Forma Antiqva. His work currently focuses on the recovery of Spanish musical heritage, chamber music with leading soloists, the conducting of orchestra and voice projects, and a stable trio with his brothers, in addition to frequent incursions into contemporary music and multimedia projects. His recordings as a soloist or director have been repeatedly nominated for the International Classical Music Awards and have received the highest acclaim by European critics. He has taught at professional and advanced conservatories in Murcia and Oviedo and has been invited to give courses, lectures and master classes throughout the country. He has founded associations and platforms for the protection of musicians’ rights, solidarity initiatives and social projects with music as an integrating element.
International Music School
The Princess of Asturias Foundation’s International Music School represents the consolidation of an ambitious project initiated in 1990 with the relocation to Asturias of the prestigious chamber orchestra “The Moscow Virtuosi” and of its six renowned professors (Gaiane Pogossova, Tsiala Kvernadze, Alexei Mijlin, Alexander Fedorchenko, Victor Afanassiev and Yuri Nasushkin) under the auspices of our institution. Thus commenced the development of an idea that was to substantially alter the artistic and musical life of the region and constitute the basis of quality teaching not only for young Asturians with musical talent, but also for young musicians from other parts of Spain or abroad. Since then, the Princess of Asturias Foundation’s patronage of music teaching and orchestral activities in the Principality has been strengthened with the backing given to numerous teaching initiatives, some of which have been directly managed by members of The Virtuosi teaching staff. After years of collaboration and on the initiative of Yuri Nasushkin, the Foundation created its International Music School in 2005 to mark the 25th anniversary of the Prince of Asturias Awards Classes are taught by a distinguished international teaching staff, while the school boasts the participation as guest teachers of some of the world’s leading musicians. Some of these have received one of the Awards the Foundation grants each year, making the school different to any other existing in Spain.
The International Music School confirms its goal of providing top class musical education with musicians from prestigious teaching centres worldwide. Since 2005, classes have been imparted by teachers from the Detmold Academy of Music, the Hanover Conservatory and the Robert Schumann Hochschule (Germany); the Royal Conservatory of Mons (Belgium); the Juilliard School and the Manhattan School, New York, the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, and the University of Maryland School of Music (USA); the Rubin Academy of Music and Dance, Jerusalem (Israel); the Giuseppe Verdi State Conservatory of Music, Turin (Italy); the Advanced School of Music and Performing Arts, Oporto - ESMAE (Portugal); the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the Yehudi Menuhin School and the Royal College of Music, London (UK); the Gnesin Academy of Music and the Tchaikovsky Conservatory, Moscow (Russia); the Geneva Conservatory of Music (Switzerland); and the Simón Bolivar Advanced Conservatory of Music and the National Network of Youth and Children’s Orchestras (Venezuela).
