The Choir of the Prince of Asturias Foundation travelled to Portugal to perform at the music cycle “Dias da Música em Belém”, which the Foundation of the Cultural Centre in Belém organizes under the title As paixões da alma. The Choir performed in two concerts on Saturday 24th April at the Cultural Centre in Belém (CCB), and on 23rd April at the residence of the Spanish Ambassador to Portugal.

The title of the music cycle, As paixões da alma, is a reference to Descartes’ last treatise, Passions of the Soul, written in 1649. In it, Descartes explains that there are six simple and primitive passions: happiness, sadness, admiration, love, hate and desire; and the rest are derived from them. More than seventy concerts were held at this cycle, suggesting a musical trip through six different itineraries: Diversity, Travels in Time, Out of the Ordinary, Free Spirit, Romantic and Charms of the voice (vocal and choral music).

The Choir of the Prince of Asturias Foundation participated in two of these itineraries. At the first concert, Diversity, which took place on Saturday 24th April at 12 noon, the Choir performed pieces by 19th Century Austrian and German composers of very different styles, such as Brahms, Bruckner and Schubert.

The second concert, The Charms of the Voice, was held at 10 p.m. The Choir performed pieces by Spanish composers in the 19th and 20th Centuries, such as Rodolfo Halffter’s Three Epitaphs and Dante Andreo’s Songs of the Land. The second part of the programme included pieces by Portuguese composers such as Lopes Graça and Eurico Caparratoso.

Performing at this cycle from 23rd to 25th April were, apart from the Choir of the Prince of Asturias Foundation, the Lisbon Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra, La Fenice Ensemble, the Aviv Quartet and the Restrospect Ensemble, among others.

The Choir also performed at a concert on Friday 23rd at 6 p.m., at the Palacio de Palhava in Lisbon, residence of the Spanish Ambassador, where they performed a repertoire with pieces by composers Rodolfo Halffter, Benito Lauret and Fernando Lopes-Graça, among others.
