The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN, for its acronym in French) has launched a competition to promote the importance of science and technology among young people. Via this initiative, CERN, in collaboration with the Prince of Asturias Foundation, wishes to emphasize the value of collective effort in achieving such significant discoveries as the Higgs boson, for whose discovery physicists Peter Higgs and François Englert were granted the Prince of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research in 2013.

The competition is open to pupils at Spanish primary and secondary schools to present their perception of science, technology, future challenges and how research can contribute to creating a better world. The different competition formats include drawing, photography, video, an article, news story or any of the items listed in the competition rules. Pupils may present their work through the CERNland portal (http://www.cernland.net/concurso/). The deadline for submitting entries is 31st March 2014.

Entries will be judged by a jury of Spanish and CERN scientists, who will select the top 50 contributions by age and format. The winners will be invited to visit CERN’s headquarters in Geneva. Furthermore, all selected entries will receive a gift from the competition organizers.
