Adolfo Suárez, Prince of Asturias Award for Concord, has died

He was bestowed with the Award in 1996 for “his personal contribution to democratic harmony among the Spanish people”.

Adolfo Suárez, 1996 Prince of Asturias Award for Concord, has died.

The Jury unanimously agreed to confer the 1996 Prince of Asturias Award for Concord on Adolfo Suárez for "the significance of his personal contribution to democratic harmony among the Spanish people, which reaches out as an example on a world-wide scale", as stated in the Minutes of the Jury.

The Jury was chaired by Sergio Marqués Fernández and was also made up of José Ramón Alvarez Rendueles, Gabino de Lorenzo, Juan Abelló, José María Amusátegui, Agustín Antuña, Adolfo Barthe Aza, Javier Benjumea, Marquis of Puebla de la Cazalla, José Celma, Ramón Colao, José Ramón Fernández Cuevas, Manuel Gómez de Pablos, Martín González del Valle, Baron of Grado, Francisco Prada, Román Suárez Blanco and Pedro de Silva Cienfuegos-Jovellanos (as acting secretary).

The Award Ceremony took place on 8th November and was chaired by HRH The Prince of Asturias. Speeches were given by Joaquín Rodrigo, Helmut Kohl, Francisco Umbral, the then president of the Foundation, José Ramón Álvarez Rendueles, and HRH Prince Felipe de Borbón.
