Institutional statement following the announcement of the abdication of HM King Juan Carlos

The President of the Foundation has expressed his gratitude to and admiration for TM The King and Queen of Spain.

Following the announcement of the abdication of HM King Juan Carlos in favour of the Prince of Asturias, the Prince of Asturias Foundation reaffirms its respect and loyalty to the Crown while expressing its intention to continue to work uninterruptedly as an institution, maintaining the commitment to culture and excellence that has always governed its activities.

Founded in 1980, the essential aims of the institution are to strengthen the existing links between the Principality and the Prince of Asturias, heir to the Spanish throne, and to contribute to extolling and promoting those scientific, cultural and humanistic values that form part of mankind’s universal heritage.

The Prince of Asturias Awards were instigated in 1981 to symbolise the goals and nature of the Foundation. The Juries for this year’s edition of the Awards are currently in the process of bestowing them.

The President of the Foundation, Matías Rodríguez Inciarte, today expressed his “admiration for the figure of HM The King” and stressed “the support and generosity that TM the King and Queen of Spain have always shown” the institution.

He also highlighted “the extraordinary boost given by HRH The Prince of Asturias –accompanied in recent years by the Princess– to the development of the Foundation that bears his name, via his constant dedication and attention and his ties to Asturias, especially through the Exemplary Town of Asturias Award, an occasion allowing the Prince and Princess to meet with Asturian society. His annual messages on the occasion of the Prince of Asturias Awards Ceremony are always followed with interest and attention and have contributed to making our Awards known worldwide”.
