The Princess of Asturias Foundation has put together a broad-ranging cultural programme that includes the participation of the Prince of Asturias Laureates in various activities during the week prior to the Awards Ceremony, which will be held on 23rd October in the Campoamor Theatre in Oviedo.

The programme, called “Awards Week”, includes 18 cultural events, to be held in Oviedo, Gijón and Avilés starting Tuesday, 20th October. The events featuring the Laureates will include working meetings, exhibitions, visits and talks. These cultural events will also count on the participation of professionals, academics and prominent figures from different fields and disciplines.

Previously, a film cycle will commence on 14th October reviewing the films by Francis Ford Coppola, Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts, which will continue until Tuesday, 20th October. It will consist of 25 sessions at 10 different locations distributed around 6 towns and cities in Asturias. This film cycle will accompanied by debates at the University of Oviedo Faculties of Law and Humanities and the “Coppola Vermouth” music session, with music from The Godfather and songs belonging to the Italian-American repertoire of the forties and fifties. Furthermore, on Saturday, 17th October, there will be a literary treasure hunt in Gijón based on the work of Leonardo Padura, Princess of Asturias Award for Literature, under the title “Cuban Gijón”. (See the Foundation website for further information).

As part of Awards Week, it is also designed an educational project entitled “Taking the Floor” has also been designed aimed at primary, secondary and baccalaureate schools in the Principality of Asturias. This is a pioneering project that will bring together students around the figure of this year’s Laureates in the categories of Technical and Scientific Research, Literature and International Cooperation. A representation of pupils who have composed the selected works, accompanied by their teachers, will have the opportunity to attend an event featuring the Laureates that they have considered in the classroom. The programme has three lines of action aimed at different ages: “Editing the Genome”, for primary pupils; “Full Stop, New Paragraph with Leonardo Padura”, aimed at students in the third year of secondary education; and “Completing Wikipedia” for secondary and baccalaureate students.

Since 1996, the Foundation has scheduled different activities in diverse locations in Asturias aimed at making the Laureates and their contributions to the world of science, culture or any other field in which they work more accessible to society at large. The Laureates will combine the activities with diverse meetings with the press, the schedule for which will be announced in the coming days.

The Regional Ministry of Education and Culture of the Principality of Asturias, the Principality of Asturias Regional Parliament, Oviedo, Gijón, Avilés and Villaviciosa Municipal Councils and the University of Oviedo have all collaborated in the organization of this series of events.

TUESDAY, 20th OCTOBER

7:30pm. “Padura, the Perfect Alibi”. Meeting with book clubs from public libraries. Tribute to Leonardo Padura, Princess of Asturias Prize for Literature, chaired by comic writer and editorial director Felipe Hernández Cava.

More than 1,500 members of 110 book clubs from Albacete, Asturias, Cantabria, Guadalajara, La Coruña, León, Madrid, Palencia, Segovia, Toledo and Vizcaya are expected to attend the event. WEDNESDAY, 21st OCTOBER

11:00am. “Completing Wikipedia”. Uploading of new content to Wikipedia, Princess of Asturias Award for International Cooperation. This activity forms part of the “Taking the Floor” initiative, the cultural programme that the Princess of Asturias Foundation has developed for primary, secondary and baccalaureate pupils in the Principality.

12 noon. “Full Stop, New Paragraph”. Literary workshop for young students with Leonardo Padura, Princess of Asturias Award for Literature. This activity forms part of the “Taking the Floor” initiative, the cultural programme that the Princess of Asturias Foundation has developed for Primary, Secondary and Baccalaureate pupils in the Principality.

12 noon.“Enjoying Philosophy”. Visit by Emilio Lledó, Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities, to the University of Oviedo Humanities Campus. Lecturers and students from various branches of the humanities will put their questions to the author in Lecture Hall A on the Milan Campus.

12:30pm. Visit by representatives of the Hospitaller Order of St John of God, Princess of Asturias Award for Concord, to the Principality of Asturias Regional Parliament. Institutional reception in honour of Brother Jesús Etayo Arrondo, Superior General of the Order, who will sign the visitors’ book and deliver a speech to the Members of Parliament on the involvement of the Order in the fabric of society at a regional, national and international level.

4:00pm. Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer Doudna, joint Princess of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research, will open the “Editing the Genome” drawings exhibition. The event aims to draw attention to the participation of primary schoolchildren in the “Taking the Floor” initiative that the Princess of Asturias Foundation has launched in schools in the Principality of Asturias. A selection of the most representative drawings will be reproduced in large format and exhibited in San Francisco Park.

The exhibition will be open from Tuesday, 20th October until Monday, 20th October.

4:00pm. Representatives of the Hospitaller Order of St John of God, Princess of Asturias Award for Concord, will pay a visit to the Sanatorio Marítimo centre.

7:30pm . "Words and humanity". Talk given by Emilio Lledó, 2015 Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities. Juán Ángel Canal, Professor of Philosophy and editor of Lledó's latest book, and Armando Menéndez Viso, Head of the Department of Philosophy at Oviedo University, will moderate the meeting.

11:00am.“Fostered Words”. Visit by Emilio Lledó, Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities, to the IES Aramo secondary school. The philosophy teachers will lead a talk in which they and their pupils will come up with vital lessons about education and choosing a good life, two of the most genuinely philosophical themes since the time of the great Greek classics.

12 noon.“Reflections on Freedom and Heresy”. Leonardo Padura, Prince of Asturias Award for Literature, will visit the University of Oviedo Humanities Campus to meet with students and lecturers.

12:30pm.Visit by representatives of Wikipedia, Princess of Asturias Award for International Cooperation, to the Principality of Asturias Regional Parliament. Institutional reception in honour of the creator and leading representatives of Wikipedia: Jimmy Wales, Lila Tretikov and Patricio Lorente.

12.30 pm.Talk by Esther Duflo, Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences. The event will be chaired by Francisco Javier Mato, translator of the Duflo’s work into Spanish.

1:00pm.Talk by Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer Doudna, joint Princess of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research, to be attended by students from the University of Oviedo Faculties of Biology, Chemistry and Medicine.

4:30pm.Esther Duflo, Princess of Asturias Award for Social Sciences, will meet with NGOs. At the meeting, she will talk about The Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab at MIT and the involvement with NGOs that this supposes. The event will be chaired by journalist Charo Izquierdo.

The members of the NGOs will receive invitations to attend.

5:00pm Round table featuring Wikipedia, Princess of Asturias Award for International Cooperation. The conversation will focus on digital and social entrepreneurs, based on the history of Wikipedia itself. Jimmy Wales, Lila Tretikov and Patricio Lorente from the Wikimedia Foundation will take part, as well as other members of the organization. The event will be chaired by Marián García and Ramón Rubio, lecturers at the Polytechnic School of Engineering in Gijón.

5:00pm “Coppola Espresso”. Francis Ford Coppola, Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts, will have a coffee with young producers and film students. The meeting will be chaired by film producers Gerardo Herrero and Mariela Besuievsky.

6:30pm Francis Ford Coppola, Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts, will meet with the public. The questions will have been chosen from among those that the public attending the film cycle have wished to make. Film director Rodrigo Cortés will chair the meeting, which will feature a performance by a quartet led by Carlos Núñez.

Those attending the screenings will participate in a draw for invitations to this event. Two tickets per person may be collected from the Jovellanos Theatre box office from Saturday 17th October on, from 12 noon to 2:00pm and from 5:30pm to 8:30pm.
