American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR)

Prince of Asturias Award for Concord 1992

The Jury for the 1992 Prince of Asturias Award for Concord, comprising Agustín Antuña Alonso, Plácido Arango Arias, Adolfo Barthe Aza, Juan Sebastián López-Arranz, Teodoro López Cuesta Egocheaga, Gabino de Lorenzo, and Pedro de Silva Cienfuegos-Jovellanos, gathered in Oviedo under the presidency of Juan Luis Rodríguez Vigil, and with José Antonio Caicoya Cores acting as secretary, have unanimously agreed to award the 1992 Prince of Asturias Award for Concord to the American Foundation for Aids Research (amfAR), after considering the following points:

The important role of private social organisations in developing the material and moral resources required to combat AIDS.

The award- winning organisation's contribution to the struggle against AIDS in developing countries by means of its technical resources and experience; the attention shown to educational and preventative measures in its programmes; its support for study and research; and its search for an active and well-organised social commitment.

Special value is also attached to the organisation's philosophy; its criterion of a universal approach to the human tragedy of AIDS; its fight, not only against the medical aspects of the disease, but also against its effects of social intolerance, collective fear, rejection and segregation.

Oviedo, 5th June 1992
