EFE Agency and José Luis López Aranguren

Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities 1995

At its meeting in Oviedo, the Jury for the 1995 Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities, made up of Diego Carcedo, Adela Cortina, Javier Fernández del Moral, Emilio Lamo de Espinosa, Manuel Olivencia, Antonio Saenz de Miera, Jesús de la Serna, Francisco Tomás y Valiente, Amelia Valcárcelchaired by Domingo García-Sabell and with Javier Gómez Cuesta acting as secretary, has decided to confer the 1995 Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities on the EFE Agency and Professor José Luis López Aranguren.

The EFE agency, which has established itself as one of the major international news agencies, links up communications between Spain, the Latin-American community and the rest of the world, has implemented innovative technology in its field, espouses the correct use of our language, and makes its presence felt –as it has recently done with its news service in Arabic– in new countries, extending its voice to them and spreading our culture.

Professor Aranguren explains Ethics and practices what he teaches. A teacher by vocation and a writer as a result of the need to communicate his thoughts, he has taught at Spanish universities –when able to– and at other European and American universities. He has always been willing to communicate what he knows and to occupy his place. Though it has not been his express intention, he has created a school of thought and, thanks to his ethical bias, has managed to reach a broader range of the population than that of specialized readers alone. Prizing the exceptional standing of both candidacies and the complementarity of their merits in the twofold and shared scope of Communication and the Humanities, the Jury has unanimously decided to confer on them the 1995 Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities.
