Howard Gardner

Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences 2011

At its meeting in Oviedo, the Jury for the 2011 Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences, made up of Mr. Lluis Xabel Álvarez Fernández, Gonzalo Anes y Álvarez de Castrillón, Marquis of Castrillón, Ms. Leslie Crawford, Mr. José Luis García Delgado, Mr. Severino García Vigón, Mr. Luis González Seara, Mr. Mauro Guillén Rodríguez, Ms. Carmen Iglesias Cano, Mr. Adolfo Menéndez Menéndez, Mr. José Manuel Otero Novas, Ms. Carmen Pérez Die, Mr. Alberto Pico Maeso, Mr. Rafael Puyol Antolín, Mr. José B. Terceiro Lomba, chaired by Aurelio Menéndez Menéndez, Marquis of Ibias, and with Mr. Juan Vázquez García acting as secretary, has decided to confer the 2011 Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences on the US professor Howard Gardner.

Full Professor at Harvard University, Howard Gardner is a psychologist who has carried out his work in the field of Education Sciences. The Jury has especially prized his academic soundness, his social and ethical commitment to improving the education system, his firm belief in excellence, his relevant international reputation and his substantial scientific output of the utmost quality, with an extensive number of his publications having been translated into all the major languages.

Considered one of the most influential scientists in the field of Social Sciences, he is the author of the theory of “multiple intelligences” and a promoter of educational projects as important as Project Zero and GoodWork, of major interest for the pedagogical renovation of the education system at an international scale. His outstanding work has been recognised through honoris causa doctorates from universities all over the world and he has been the recipient of some of the most renowned awards in the disciplines of Psychology and Education.
