Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts 2017

Statement by William Kentridge on being granted the 2017 Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts

“I am delighted to be a recipient of the 2017 Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts. It is a great honour to be numbered among the previous winners within the arts, and further, to be part of the community of people who have been thus honoured: not just in the fields of visual arts and literature, but those who have received the award in recognition of their work within a more directly social context. The work done by artists, in diverse and often indirect ways, forms part of a larger project about what it is to be in the world at the moment. The scope of the awards seems to acknowledge this, in its recognition of those others in whose company the artists or writers are given their awards.”
