The Prince of Asturias Foundation to offset the entire carbon footprint generated during Awards Week

ECODES has conferred its CeroCO2 label on the 2013 Prince of Asturias Awards.

The EDP Foundation will provide two electric cars and a hybrid vehicle for staff to move around during Awards Week.

Following the process initiated four years ago to reduce the environmental impact generated by its activities, the Prince of Asturias Foundation works together with the Ecology and Development Foundation-ECODES to offset the carbon footprint resulting from the activities carried out during Awards Week. This commitment has resulted in the Prince of Asturias Awards Week one more being conferred with the CeroCO2 label (i.e. for net zero CO2 emissions).

A significant reduction in overall emissions (35.6%, i.e. approximately 111 tonnes CO2) was already achieved in 2012 in the majority of the assessed emission sources compared to the inventory carried out in 2011. There has thus been a decrease of 139.3 tonnes CO2 in the use of means of transport with more impact (aircraft) and 4.6 tonnes in emissions related to the consumption of paper, which has also been influenced by the use of recycled paper.

ECODES has estimated a carbon footprint of 200,234 tonnes, corresponding to all the events taking place during this week and calculated on the basis of the figures from 2012. This overall figure includes emissions from energy consumption and paper, as well as from the movements that occur as a result of events organized around the Awards Ceremony and the preparatory sessions.

The Foundation has decided to offset its carbon footprint through the CeroCO2 programme project "Conservation of the Peruvian Amazon in Madre de Dios". This initiative aims to prevent the deforestation of 100,000 hectares of forest in the Vilcabamba-Amoro eco-corridor, an area in which endangered plant and animal species have their habitat. Its verification by CCBS-Gold also guarantees benefits to local communities and the sustainable development of local producers and indigenous communities.

Via its CeroCO2 label and programme, ECODES works to enable Spanish companies and organizations to offset their carbon footprint. The compensation consists of a voluntary monetary contribution for each tonne of CO2 generated to a project that avoids or captures the same amount of CO2 in a developing country.

Electric cars

In addition to the aforementioned compensation, the environmental commitment of the Prince of Asturias Foundation includes reducing its carbon footprint. To this end, this year it will count on two electric vehicles and a hybrid vehicle donated by the EDP Foundation, which will be used for staff to move around the city of Oviedo.
