LAUREATES 12 Trayectoria Background “Ha expresado en su obra emociones y metáforas relacionadas con la historia y la realidad de su país, que trascienden, sin embargo, estas últimas, y plantean cuestiones esenciales de la condición humana, combinando temas en que predomina la investigación puramente poética y estética con los de contenido sociopolítico”. “[He] has expressed emotions and metaphors related to the history and reality of his country which nonetheless transcend the latter and raise essential questions regarding the human condition, combining subjects in which purely poetic and aesthetic investigation predominate alongside themes with socio-political content.” Premio Princesa de Asturias de las Artes Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts WILLIAM KENTRIDGE William Kentridge (Johannesburgo, Sudáfrica, 1955) estudió Ciencias Políticas y Estudios Africanos en la Universidad de Witwatersrand y Bellas Artes en la Fundación de Arte de Johannesburgo. Más tarde se trasladó a París para estudiar teatro en la Escuela Internacional Jacques Lecoq y trabajó como director artístico en series de televisión. Se dio a conocer en la feria “documenta X” de Kassel y en las bienales de São Paulo y Venecia. Desde entonces, sus “películas dibujadas” han recorrido las salas de los centros de arte más prestigiosos del circuito internacional. Los grabados de las series Pit y de las Domestic scenes construyeron la base sobre la que giran sus carboncillos y animaciones posteriores, Johannesburg: 2nd greatest city after Paris y Felix in exile , en las que dos personajes, Soho Eckstein y Felix Teitlebaum, plasman el sufrimiento, la dominación, la culpa, el tiempo y la memoria, temas protagonistas de su obra. En 2016 fundó en Johannesburgo el Centre for the Less Good Idea, destinado a la creación artística de proyectos multidisciplinares. Kyoto Premium y Dan David Prize, es miembro honorario de la Academia Americana de las Artes y las Letras, doctor honoris causa por las universidades de Yale y Ciudad del Cabo y caballero de las Artes y las Letras de Francia. William Kentridge ((Johannesburg, South Africa, 1955) studied Politics and African Studies at the University of the Witwatersrand and Fine Arts at the Johannesburg Art Foundation. He moved to Paris to study at the Jacques Lecoq International Theatre School and worked as an artistic director in television series. He became known in the “documenta X” art exhibition held in Kassel and in the São Paulo and Venice biennials. His “hand- drawn films” have been shown in the halls of the most prestigious art centres on the international circuit. The engravings of what are known as the Pit series and the Domestic Scenes built the foundation on which his charcoals and later animations rest. Johannesburg, 2nd Greatest City After Paris and Felix in Exile stand out for the introduction of two characters, Soho Eckstein and Felix Teitlebaum, through whom he portrays suffering, domination, guilt, time and memory, leading themes in his oeuvre. In 2016, he founded the Centre for the Less Good Idea in Johannesburg, given over to the artistic creation of cross-disciplinary projects. Awarded the Kyoto Prize and the Dan David Prize, Kentridge is an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, holds honorary degrees from the Universities of Yale and Cape Town and is Chevalier of the French Order of Arts and Letters.
