Princess of Asturias Awards 09/28/2021

Emmanuel Carrère, Gloria Steinem, José Andrés and Katalin Karikó are to give speeches at The 2021 Princess Of Asturias Awards Ceremony

The ceremony will be held on Friday 22nd October at the Campoamor Theatre in Oviedo.

The Laureates will begin arriving in Asturias during the week.

Writer Emmanuel Carrère, Princess of Asturias Laureate for Literature, journalist and writer Gloria Steinem, Princess of Asturias Laureate for Communication and Humanities, chef, entrepreneur and philanthropist José Andrés, Princess of Asturias Award for Concord, and biochemist Katalin Karikó, joint Princess of Asturias Laureate for Technical and Scientific Research, will be the laureates giving speeches at the 41st Awards Ceremony.

To be held on 22nd October at the Campoamor Theatre in Oviedo, the Princess of Asturias Awards Ceremony will be presided over by TM The King and Queen, with the presence of TRH The Princess of Asturias and Infanta Sofía of Spain.

The ceremony will feature a simultaneous translation service in three languages for the entire theatre. The Foundation will distribute receivers among the audience, who will be able to hear speeches by the Laureates in Spanish, English or French.

The ceremony will be accessible to persons with hearing impairment by means of its transmission in sign language at the Campoamor Theatre itself as well as via the Foundation website. The theatre will also be provided with a hearing induction loop system.

LAUREATES

The Laureates, who will start arriving in the Principality during the week, will participate in different cultural events in addition to offering press conferences upon their arrival in Oviedo.

Gloria Steinem, Princess of Asturias Laureate for Communication and Humanities, Marina Abramović, Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts, and Katalin Karikó, joint Princess of Asturias Laureate for Technical and Scientific Research, will be the first to arrive.

Teresa Perales, Princess of Asturias Award for Sports, Emmanuel Carrère, Princess of Asturias Laureate for Literature, and Drew Weissman, Philip Felgner, Uğur Şahin, Özlem Türeci, Derrick Rossi and Sarah Gilbert, joint Princess of Asturias Laureates for Technical and Scientific Research together with Katalin Karikó, will be arriving throughout the week.

The organization CAMFED, Campaign for Female Education, Princess of Asturias Award for International Cooperation, will be represented at the ceremony by Lucy Lake, CEO, and Fiona Mavhinga, Executive Advisor.

The NGO World Central Kitchen, jointly granted the Princess of Asturias Award for Concord together with José Andrés, will be represented by the organization’s CEO Nate Mook.

Amartya Sen, Princess of Asturias Laureate for Social Sciences, will not be attending the ceremony.

Addendum to the Regulations

Given the circumstances arising from the pandemic, the Foundation’s Board of Trustees has agreed to prolong the addendum to the 2020 Princess of Asturias Awards Regulations, approved in 2020, that enables all the Laureates to receive the sculpture, insignia, diploma and cash prize corresponding to the Award they have been granted, regardless of whether they attend the ceremony or not.
