As a complement to classroom teaching, teachers and students participating in the International Music School 2015 Summer Courses will give ten concerts over this period at the Prince Felipe Auditorium and the Cajastur Cultural Centre in Oviedo. Admission will be with free until all seats are taken. A series of street concerts will likewise be held between 20th and 24th July in the Plaza de la Constitución (town square), in Oviedo.

As a novelty this year, the School is to organize a number of outdoor micro-concerts under the title “Coffee with Music, Please!”. These will consist of musical interventions lasting 5 minutes that will be performed by soloists on six, small stages, where they will interpret different musical passages that will be repeated over the period of an hour. There will be seats available to listen to these micro-concerts while enjoying a coffee, in groups of up to twelve people per performance. This activity will commence at 7:30pm tomorrow (Saturday 18th July), in the Plaza Alfonso II “El Casto” (cathedral square), Oviedo.

A hundred and forty-eight students from Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal, the United States and Spain are participating in the courses, 56 per cent of the cost of which is borne by the Foundation. This initial, across-the-board subsidy means that all enrolled students have access to affordable academic fees for a course of these characteristics.

Mezzo-soprano Teresa Berganza, 1991 Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts, gave the inaugural talk. In previous years, the courses have been opened by relevant figures from the music world such as Jorge Ruíz, leader of the Spanish pop/rock group “Maldita Nerea”; music producer Carlos Jean; Fernando Argenta, host of the music programmes “Clásicos Populares” and “El Conciertazo”; singers Luz Casal, Victor Manuel and Ainhoa Arteta; Galician musician Carlos Nuñez; and Lebanese violinist Ara Malikian.

Twenty-five professors of ten different nationalities will give classes covering the standard range of symphonic orchestral instruments, in addition to musical ensemble classes for Youth Orchestra and Junior Orchestra (both with programmes focussing on musical tales), Chamber Music, String Quartet, Wind Ensemble, Improvisation and Jazz.

For the second year running, the School is to offer a complementary activity called “Concert Forum”, consisting of audio-visual screenings of concerts linked to Prince of Asturias Laureates recorded in Oviedo. In order for string students to gain first-hand knowledge of the basics of maintaining their musical instruments, the School has scheduled the workshop entitled “The Work of the Luthier”, which will be given by instrument builder Diego del Valle. The Musical Health Department also maintains its contribution, imparting the subject “The Musician’s Health: an active body and a calm mind.”
