The Princess of Asturias Foundation has put together a broad-ranging cultural programme that includes the participation of this year’s Princess of Asturias Laureates in various activities between 11th and 20th October. The Awards Ceremony will be held on Friday, 19th October at the Campoamor Theatre in Oviedo.
The programme, entitled “Awards Week”, comprises around 50 cultural events that will be held in Avilés, Infiesto, Mieres, Gijón and Oviedo. The Laureates will hold meetings with the public, give talks and meet with pupils from Asturian schools, among other activities. Researchers, journalists and professionals from different fields and disciplines will participate in some of the events scheduled for this week together with the Laureates.
The activities will commence on Thursday, 11th October with the inauguration of the series of events entitled “Scorsese’s Factory”, comprising some thirty activities paying tribute to the career of American filmmaker Martin Scorsese, 2018 Princess of Asturias Laureate for the Arts, which will be held in the former La Vega Arms Factory, in Oviedo.
Since 1996, the Foundation has scheduled different activities in diverse locations in Asturias aimed at making the Laureates and their contributions to the world of science, culture or any other field in which they work better known to society at large. The Laureates will combine the activities with diverse meetings with the press, the schedule for which will be announced in the coming days.
Within the framework of Awards Week, an educational project entitled “Taking the Floor” was launched four years ago aimed at primary, secondary and pre-university pupils in the Principality of Asturias, in which nearly 6,000 pupils from 91 schools have taken part. This edition of the project will bring together schoolchildren around the figures of this year’s Laureates in the categories of Communication and Humanities (Alma Guillermoprieto), Concord (Sylvia A. Earle) and International Cooperation (Amref Health Africa Global and Amref Salud África España).
This series of events counts on the collaboration of the Ministry of Defence, the Regional Ministry of Education and Culture of the Principality of Asturias, the Principality of Asturias Regional Parliament, Oviedo, Gijón, Avilés and Piloña Municipal Councils, and the University of Oviedo, as well as the collaboration of the Cajastur-Liberbank Foundation, a member of the Princess of Asturias Board of Trustees.
