Princess of Asturias Awards 05/13/2022

Teresa Berganza, Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts, has died

Joint Laureate in 1991, together with Victoria de los Ángeles, Montserrat Caballé, José Carreras, Pilar Lorengar, Alfredo Kraus and Plácido Domingo

Teresa Berganza, 1991 Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts, has died.

The Jury decided to confer the Award jointly to Victoria de los Ángeles, Montserrat Caballé, José Carreras, Pilar Lorengar, Alfredo Kraus and Plácido Domingo. As stated in the Minutes: “the artists who, as a group, receive this Award, personify with their immense musical talent a moment of exceptional brilliance in our lyrical music, bearing the name of Spain everywhere and encouraging a growing love of music across the whole of society”.

The Jury was chaired by Antonio Pedrol Ríu and was made up of Bernardo Fernández, Simón Marchán, Manuel Martín Ferrand, Miguel de Oriol e Ybarra, Araceli Pereda Alonso, José Manuel Pita Andrade y Miguel Satrústegui and Jorge Fernández Bustillo as acting secretary.

The Awards Ceremony, which took place on 18th October, was presided over by HM King Felipe VI, then Prince of Asturias. Besides the address by His Majesty, the speeches at the ceremony were given by Rafael Hernández Colón, governor and representative of Puerto Rico’s People; Sadako Ogata, then President of ACNUR; and Plácido Arango, then President of the Prince of Asturias Foundation.
