Programme of concerts for the Princess of Asturias Foundation's International Music School 2016 Summer Courses

Teachers and students are to give ten concerts and a series of street performances

©FPA

As a complement to classroom teaching, the teachers and students of the International Music School Summer Courses 2016 will give ten concerts during this period at the Prince Felipe Auditorium and, as a novelty this year, the Conde de Toreno Mansion in Oviedo. Admission will be with free until all seats are taken. A series of street concerts will likewise be held between 25th and 29th July in the Plaza de la Constitución (town square), in Oviedo.

For the second year running, the school is to organize a number of outdoor micro-concerts consisting of musical interventions lasting 5 minutes to be performed on small stages by soloists who will interpret different musical passages that will be repeated over the period of an hour. There will be seats available to listen to these micro-concerts while enjoying a coffee in small groups. This activity will commence at 7:30pm on Saturday 23rd July in the Plaza Alfonso II “El Casto” (cathedral square), in Oviedo.

A hundred and fifty-five students from Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, Portugal, Switzerland, Venezuela and Spain are participating in the courses, 57.5 per cent of the cost of which is borne by the Foundation. This initial, across-the-board subsidy means that all enrolled students have access to affordable academic fees for a course of these characteristics.

Cellist Asier Polo delivered the inaugural lecture today in a ceremony presided over by HM The Queen. In previous years, the courses have been opened by relevant figures from the music world such as Jorge Ruíz, leader of the Spanish pop/rock group “Maldita Nerea”; music producer Carlos Jean; Fernando Argenta, host of the music programmes “Clásicos Populares” and “El Conciertazo”; singers Luz Casal, Victor Manuel, Ainhoa Arteta and Teresa Berganza; Galician musician Carlos Nuñez; and Lebanese violinist Ara Malikian.

Twenty-five professors from ten different countries will give classes covering the standard range of symphonic orchestral instruments, in addition to musical ensemble classes for Youth Orchestra and Junior Orchestra (with programmes focussing on the 400th anniversary of the death of Cervantes), Chamber Music, String Quartet, Wind Ensemble, Jazz and Improvisation.

The school will also offer a complementary activity called “Concert Forum”, consisting of audio-visual screenings of concerts linked to Prince of Asturias Laureates recorded in Oviedo.

In order for string students to gain first-hand knowledge of the basics of maintaining their musical instruments, the school has scheduled the workshop entitled “The Work of the Luthier”, which will be given by instrument builder Diego del Valle. The Musical Health Department also maintains its contribution, imparting the subject “The Musician’s Health: an active body and a calm mind”, providing training of the physical resources of the human body and the conditioning of certain psychological aspects of the mind.
