Princess of Asturias Awards 10/08/2010

Programme of activities with the Laureates held during the days prior to the 2010 Prince of Asturias Awards Presentation Ceremony

The 2010 Prince of Asturias Awards Laureates held different activities arranged for the Week of the Awards.

The activities theld in Oviedo and Gijón included colloquiums, exhibitions and mass meetings with children and young people. The laureates who held these meetings were: the sculptor Richard Serra, the writer Amin Maalouf, the archaeological team of the Warriors in the Mausoleum of Xi'an, the sociologists Alain Touraine and Zygmunt Bauman, the scientific researchers in the battle against pain David Julius, Baruch Minke and Linda Watkins, the President of Manos Unidas and three aid workers in Asia, Africa and America and the representatives of the National Transplant Organization (Spain) and The Transplantation Society.

In addition to this, the Museo de Bellas Artes de Asturias opened an exhibition on 19th October, with 32 pictures to remember historical moments of the work of the sculptor Richard Serra.

Since 1996, the Foundation arranges a diversity of activities to be held at different places in Asturias in order to give the society the chance to meet the laureates and their contributions to the world of science, culture or of any other field in which they develop their work.

The 2010 Prince of Asturias Awards Laureates combine their scheduled activities with press meetings.

PROGRAMME OF ACTIVITIES

TUESDAY, 19th OCTOBER

7.00 p.m Opening of the photographic exhibition on the work of Richard Serra at the Museo de Bellas Artes de Asturias, with the presence of the Regional Minister of Culture for the Principality of Asturias Mrs. Mercedes Álvarez, and the Director of the Prince of Asturias Foundation, Teresa Sanjurjo (C/ Santa Ana, 1. Oviedo).

7.30 p.m Colloquium “Manos Unidas: the solidarity as the driving force for development” with Myriam García Abrisqueta, president of the NGO, and three aid workers from the organization: José María Caballero, missionary in Sierra Leona, Carlos Vicente, who works in Ecuador and Cayetana Iribarnegaray, aid worker in India.

8.00 pm “An army of knowledge”: an informative talk given by Xu Weihong, Director of the archaeological team of the Terra-Cotta Warriors and Horses of the Mausoleum in Xi´an; Cao Wei, Deputy Director of the Xi´an Museum of the Warriors of Xi´an, and Zhang Weixing, member of the archaeological team. The event was chaired by Taciana Fisac, Director of the East-Asia Research Centre of the Autonomous University of Madrid and was introduced by José Avelino Gutiérrez, Director of the History Department of the University of Oviedo.

WEDNESDAY, 20th OCTOBER

7.30 p.m Amin Maalouf’s meeting with the public, under the title “In the limits of Literature”, chaired by Rosa María Calaf.

8.00 p.m Colloquium with Alain Touraine and Zygmunt Bauman, named “Parallel lives. Common challenges” chaired by Daniel Innerarity, Professor of Philosophy at the University of Zaragoza.

THURSDAY, 21st OCTOBER

11.30 a.m Meeting with Rafael Matesanz, Director of the Spanish National Transplant Organization (Spain), and the representatives of The Transplantation Society, Jeremy Chapman and Francis Delmonico, as well as members of the Government of the Principality and transplantation organizations from Asturias.

6,00 p.m. Meeting of Vicente del Bosque with the public, chaired by the sports journalist Manfredo Álvarez.

7.00 p.m “Pain as a challenge for Humanity”: colloquium with David Julius, Baruch Minke and Linda Watkins, chaired by the neuroscientist Carlos Belmonte Martínez.
