Princess of Asturias Awards 10/03/2014

The Prince of Asturias Foundation is to organize the 1ST “Big apple” fun run to mark the conferral of the 2014 Prince of Asturias Award for sports on the New York City Marathon

The race will be held in Gijon at 11:00am on Saturday 25th October, with the participation of renowned athletes.

The Prince of Asturias Foundation is to organize the 1st “Big Apple” Fun Run to mark the conferral of the 2014 Prince of Asturias Award for Sports on the New York City Marathon. The 5-km race will be held in Gijón at 11:00am on Saturday, 25th October. Registration is free and limited to 3,000 participants.

The organization of the New York City Marathon has provided ten free registrations for the 2015 New York City Marathon to be raffled among all the participants in the fun run.

Registration will be open between 6th and 22nd October, or until completing the quota of 3,000 registered runners, via Gijón Municipal Sports Board’s website (deporte.gijon.es). Participants can pick up their numbers on 23rd and 24th October −between 5pm and 9pm− and on 25th −from 9am to half an hour before the start of the race− in the main entrance hall to the Gijón International Exhibition Grounds (FIDMA), located on Paseo del Doctor Fleming.

Participants

Mary Wittenberg, president and executive director of the New York Road Runners and director of the New York City Marathon, will be in charge of the starting gun and will participate in this event along with the chairman of the board of the New York Road Runners and member of the founding team of the New York City Marathon, George Hirsch.span>

In addition, renowned athletes will run alongside ordinary participants on a course that will start out from Hermanos Castro Park and end at the Former Municipal Fish Market, where there will be a replica of the New York City Marathon finish line.

Athletes who have already confirmed their participation include:

  • Abel Antón, Fabián Roncero, Alberto Juzdado, Martín Fiz and José Manuel García, members of the Spanish marathon team bestowed with the 1997 Prince of Asturias Award for Sports.
  • Chepkite Tegla Loroupe (Kenya), the first African woman to win the New York City Marathon in 1994, a victory she repeated in 1995.
  • Germán Silva (Mexico), who won the New City York Marathon in 1994 and 1995 and competed in the Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996 Olympics.
  • Alessandra Aguilar (Spain), fifth in the Marathon World Championships in Moscow in 2013 and competitor in the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Olympics.
