The presentation of the 2020 Princess of Asturias Awards, presided over by TM The King and Queen and with the presence of TRH The Princess of Asturias and the Infanta Sofía, will take place at 6:30pm this coming Friday 16th October at the Reconquista Hotel.

Given the exceptional situation generated by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Foundation’s Board of Trustees decided at an extraordinary meeting held on 31st August to move the presentation of this year’s Awards to the Salón Covadonga reception room at the Reconquista Hotel. This room was where the founding charter of the Foundation was signed in 1980 and where the official audience of TM The King and Queen’s with the Laureates takes place.

With the primary goal of preserving public health and minimizing the risk of contributing to the spread of the virus, this new act of presentation will have very few participants and will be held in the aforementioned reception room without the presence of the public.

Within the context of the health alert, the Board also adopted the following decision regarding the presence of the Laureates: “Given the varied, complex situation in the different countries in which the Laureates reside, the Foundation will not ask them to travel to Asturias to attend the ceremony. Those who, on their own initiative, express their intention to attend and who reside in territories whose travel restrictions allow them to make the trip, may do so if they so wish.”

This measure is complemented by the following addendum to the 2020 Princess of Asturias Awards Regulations, approved last April: “All the Laureates will receive the sculpture, insignia, diploma and cash prize corresponding to the Award they have been granted, whether they attend the ceremony or not.”

The following is a list of the 2020 Princess of Asturias Award Laureates who have confirmed their attendance at the presentation:

  • Princess of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research: Emmanuel Candès will come to Oviedo to collect the Award.
  • Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts: Andrea Morricone will be present at the presentation on behalf of his father, Ennio Morricone, who died a few months ago.
  • Princess of Asturias Award for Sports: Carlos Sainz Cenamor.
  • Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities: Cristina Fuentes La Roche, Director for Latin America and International Projects, and María Sheila Cremaschi, Director for Spain.
  • Princess of Asturias Award for Concord: a representation of the group of Spanish health workers on the front line against COVID-19.
