The Princess of Asturias Foundation has put together a broad-ranging cultural programme to mark the thirty-ninth edition of the Princess of Asturias Awards. The events, which will count on the participation of the Laureates, are to take place between 10th and 17th October. Registration for some of the activities will open at 12 noon this coming Monday, 7th October.

The programme, entitled “Awards Week”, comprises around 50 cultural events that will be held in Avilés, Gijón and Oviedo. Since 1996, the Foundation has scheduled different activities in diverse locations in Asturias aimed at making the Laureates and their contributions to the world of science, culture or any other field in which they work better known to society at large.

Within the framework of “Awards Week”, the Laureates will take part in meetings with the public and students from several schools in Asturias, in addition to talks, round tables and exhibitions.

“Awards Week” will commence on Thursday, 10th October, with the opening of different installations at the La Vega Former Arms Factory. Throughout the week, a wide variety of activities will be held in various theatres, faculties and schools in the region.

The “Taking the Floor” educational project is now in its fifth year and, in this new edition, will count on the participation of around 6,000 primary, secondary, pre-university and vocational training students from 108 schools in the Principality of Asturias. This initiative consists of eight activities that will seek to make the merits and careers of the Laureates in the categories of Communication and Humanities (Prado Museum), International Cooperation (Salman Khan and the Khan Academy), Sports (Lindsey Vonn), Literature (Siri Hustvedt), Social Sciences (Alejandro Portes), Technical and Scientific Research (Joanne Chory and Sandra Myrna Díaz) and Concord (City of Gdansk) better known to the educational community.

The Spanish Ministry of Defence, the Regional Ministry of Education and Culture of the Principality of Asturias, the Principality of Asturias Regional Parliament, Oviedo, Gijón and Avilés Municipal Councils and the University of Oviedo have all collaborated in the organization of this series of events.
