The Princess of Asturias Foundation has put together a broad-ranging cultural programme that includes the participation of the Princess of Asturias Laureates in various activities during the week leading up to the Awards Ceremony, which will be held on 21st October in the Campoamor Theatre in Oviedo.

The programme, called “Awards Week”, includes more than twenty cultural activities to be held in Oviedo, Gijón, Avilés, Pola de Siero and Sama de Langreo starting Monday, 17th October. The events featuring the Laureates will include working meetings, exhibitions, visits and talks. These cultural events will also count on the participation of professionals, academics and prominent figures from different fields and disciplines.

As part of Awards Week, an educational project entitled “Taking the Floor” has also been put together aimed at primary, secondary and pre-university pupils in the Principality of Asturias, in which 75 schools have taken part. This constitutes the second edition of a project that will bring together pupils around the figures of this year’s Laureates in the categories of Technical and Scientific Research (Hugh Herr), Social Sciences (Mary Beard) and International Cooperation (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement).

A representation of pupils who have composed the selected works, accompanied by their teachers, will have the opportunity to attend an event featuring the Laureates they have considered in the classroom. The programme has three lines of action aimed at different ages: “SuperHERRo, the Bionic Man”, for primary school pupils; “The Adventure of the Classics with Mary Beard”, aimed at students in their third or fourth year of secondary education; and “Visual Arts” for primary, secondary and pre-university pupils.

Since 1996, the Foundation has scheduled different activities in diverse locations in Asturias aimed at making the Laureates and their contributions to the world of science, culture or any other field in which they work more accessible to society at large. The Laureates will combine the activities with diverse meetings with the press, the schedule for which will be announced in the coming days.

The Regional Ministry of Education and Culture of the Principality of Asturias, the Principality of Asturias Regional Parliament, Oviedo, Gijón, Avilés, Siero and Langreo Municipal Councils, and the University of Oviedo have all collaborated in the organization of this series of events.
