Luis García Berlanga

Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts 1986

The members of the Jury for the 1986 Prince of Asturias Award for Arts, Carmela Arias y Díaz de Rábago, Countess of Fenosa, Oriol Bohígas, Antonio Fernández Alba, José Luis Garci, Manuel Martín Ferrand, Xavier Montsalvage, Antonio Pedrol Ríus, Ignacio Quintana and Fernando Rey gathered in Oviedo on the 8th and 9th of May, 1986, under the presidency of Federico Sopeña and with José Luis Yuste acting as secretary, have decided by majority to grant this award to Luis García Berlanga, one of the great creators of cinema of our times, who undertakes throughout his work, with exemplary independence, a critical but good-natured analysis of Spanish society.
