Brazil´s Movimiento Nacional de Meninos e Meninas da Rua, is the most important Brazilian association of this kind and the one which enjoys greatest prestige. It was created in 1985 by a group of educators, through a meeting promoted by UNICEF. Co-ordinated by the journalist Mario Volpi, it has more than 3,000 educators, working in twenty Brazilian states. This movement bases its work on detecting the children, forming them into teams and carrying out teaching activities which will help them to make a future for themselves and to free themselves from the world of violence and persecution which they often suffer. The Movement works habitually with Amnesty International and other organisations which focus on the struggle from human rights and for the welfare of children.

All their work is underpinned by their commitment to making a reality or the rights of children, first spelt out by the founders and now enshrined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
