Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance

Princess of Asturias Award for International Cooperation 2020

In the course of its online meeting, the Jury for the 2020 Princess of Asturias Award for International Cooperation, composed of Maite Arango García-Urtiaga, Eugenia Bieto Caubet, Francisco de Paula Bisbal Pons, Mitchell Codding, Beatriz Domínguez-Gil González, Paula Farias Huanqui, Enrique Fernández-Miranda y Lozana, Duke of Fernández-Miranda, Luis García Montero, Daniel López Acuña, Jerónimo López Martínez, Íñigo J. Losada Rodríguez, Sami Naïr, Juan Carlos del Olmo Castillejos, chaired by Gustavo Suárez Pertierra and with Gloria Fernández-Lomana García acting as secretary, has decided to confer the 2020 Princess of Asturias Award for International Cooperation on Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, for their work in facilitating universal access to vaccines to reduce the impact of infectious diseases and for contributing to the protection of half of the global child population through vaccination routines.

Gavi is an international cooperation mechanism that brings together public and private agents to provide support to national health systems to carry out programmes in 73 countries worldwide via which 760 million children in developing countries have been vaccinated.

Characterized by innovative solutions, Gavi contributes directly to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and has an impact on improving life expectancy. Its work, based on multilateral cooperation, brings together all social sectors and unifies efforts in favour of the health of the most vulnerable.

By conferring this Award, the Jury wishes to highlight the importance that immunity through vaccination has as regards public health, as recommended by scientific knowledge.
