Princess of Asturias Foundation Board of Trustees

9th SEPTEMBER 2020

Faced with the health emergency situation generated by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Princess of Asturias Foundation Board of Trustees has been in regular communication with the various health authorities during these months and has exhaustively followed the evolution of the virus in order to adopt all necessary measures at its disposal.

Thus, in keeping with the criteria of responsibility and prudence, the Foundation has been working since the end of February on an ever-evolving contingency plan aimed at minimizing the risk of contagion and the spread of the virus among the people who make up the institution’s team and of those who, in one way or another, may come into contact with the Foundation via the activities it carried out.

It has likewise been regularly assessing the potential impact of the pandemic on the Foundation’s main activity –the granting and presentation of the Princess of Asturias Awards– in order to work on alternative formats that would allow it to fulfil the institution’s mission, as has been the case until now.

The Board of Trustees considers that these Awards –which constitute a symbol of recognition of the finest human values– contribute to enriching society through the work of the Laureates, while offering encouragement and role models at a time when they are more necessary than ever.

As regards the presentation of the Princess of Asturias Awards, scheduled for 16th October, and the cultural, scientific, humanistic and sports dissemination activities that are usually held around this event, the Board of Trustees has agreed to the following measures, circumstances permitting:

PRINCESS OF ASTURIAS AWARDS
  • The Princess of Asturias Awards Ceremony reflects many elements that contribute to the solemnity of this act of celebrating culture, which the Board of Trustees considers impossible to maintain in the current circumstances. Therefore, with the main objective of preserving public health and minimizing the risk of contributing to the spread of the virus, the Awards Ceremony, which is usually held at the Campoamor Theatre in Oviedo, will have a different format, with a very small audience and will be held at another location –presumably at the Reconquista Hotel (Oviedo)–, complying with strict health security measures.
  • Given the varied, complex situation in the different countries in which the Laureates reside, the Foundation will not ask them to travel to Asturias to attend the ceremony. Those who, on their own initiative, express their intention to attend and who reside in territories whose travel restrictions allow them to make the trip, may do so if they so wish.
  • According to the addendum to the 2020 Princess of Asturias Awards Regulations, approved by the Board of Trustees last April, given the exceptional circumstances in which we find ourselves, all the Laureates will receive the sculpture, insignia, diploma and cash prize corresponding to the Award they have been granted, whether they attend the ceremony or not.
  • The lunch and reception that has traditionally been offered on the occasion of the Awards Ceremony have been suspended.
PARALLEL ACTIVITIES: “AWARDS WEEK”
  • The cultural programme that is organized around the Awards Ceremony will also be adapted to the special health circumstances of the present moment, adjusting its formats and audiences and centralizing most of the activities on the premises of Oviedo’s former Arms Factory, thus allowing the formulated prevention plan to be met with the maximum guarantees.
  • Due to the situation in the schools, the regional cultural programme entitled “Taking the Floor” has been suspended.
PRINCESS OF ASTURIAS AWARDS CONCERT
  • The traditional concert that takes place on the eve of the Awards Ceremony will not be held this year.
EXEMPLARY TOWN OF ASTURIAS AWARD
  • With the aim of avoiding potential crowds, the bestowal of the Exemplary Town of Asturias will have a different format to usual, with a shorter tour and an outdoor institutional event for the local residents only.
  • The picnic with the residents has been suspended.
