LAUREATES 16 Trayectoria Background Amref Health Africa es una ONG fundada en Kenia en 1957 por los doctores Michael Wood (Reino Unido), Tom Rees (EE. UU.) y Archibald McIndoe (Nueva Zelanda) para proporcionar atención quirúrgica de calidad a las poblaciones remotas y desatendidas del este de África. Para ello idearon el servicio de los flying doctors , doctores piloto con avionetas-ambulancia para llegar a zonas inaccesibles. En 1997 la ONG inauguró en España Amref Salud África . Con sede central en Nairobi y 19 oficinas regionales y nacionales en África, Europa y América del Norte, en sus más de sesenta años de existencia ha atendido a 110 millones de personas, de los que ochenta son mujeres y niños, y formado a doce millones de trabajadores de la salud. La organización trabaja seis líneas estratégicas: salud materna e infantil, formación de profesionales y refuerzo de capacidades, servicios clínicos y de diagnóstico, lucha contra enfermedades olvidadas, sida, tuberculosis y malaria, investigación y acciones de promoción y agua y saneamiento. Destaca su trabajo para la erradicación de la mutilación genital femenina, que sustituye por ritos de paso alternativos, y la iniciativa LEAP, una plataforma de formación en línea para profesionales. Amref Health Africa is an NGO founded in Kenya in 1957 by three doctors, Michael Wood (UK), Tom Rees (USA) and Archibald McIndoe (New Zealand), to provide quality surgical care to East Africa’s remote and neglected populations. They thus devised the ‘flying doctors’ service with light aircraft-ambulances able to reach inaccessible areas. In 1997, the NGO inaugurated Amref Salud África in Spain. Headquartered in Nairobi and with 19 regional and national offices in Africa, Europe and North America, since its creation the organization has provided healthcare to 110 million people, 80 million of whom are women and children, and has trained 12 million health workers. The organization has 6 strategic priorities: maternal and child health; the training of professionals and capacity building; clinical and diagnostic services; the fight against neglected diseases, AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria; research and promotion actions; and water and sanitation. Also worthy of note is its work to erradicate female genital mutilation, replacing it with alternative rites of passage, and the LEAP initiative: a platform for continuous online training for professionals. “For their sustained efforts to respond to the needs of millions of people on the African continent, complementing the actions of local health systems.
