Sus gestas permanecerán en la memoria de futuras generaciones”. “Their work of a social and humanitarian nature and in spreading the values of mountaineering has made them an example for humanity. Their deeds will remain in the memory of future generations.” Reinhold Messner, primer hombre que conquistó la cima de los 14 ochomiles sin oxígeno artificial, y Krzysztof Wielicki, primero en escalar tres ochomiles en invierno, honran este deporte y son ejemplo de superación. Reinhold Messner (Funes, Bolzano, Italia, 1944) se convirtió, con su ascensión al Lhotse, en el primer hombre que conquistaba las 14 cimas de más de ocho mil metros que hay en el planeta. Su primer ochomil fue el Nanga Parbat y le siguieron el Manaslu, el Hidden Peak, el Gasherbrum II, el Nanga Parbat, el Everest, el K-2, de nuevo el Everest y el Sisha Pagma, Kangchenjunga, Annapurna, Broad Peak, Cho Oyu, Dhaulagiri, los dos Gasherbrum en los primeros años de la década de los 80 y el Lhotse, su decimocuarto ochomil. Fue el encargado de realizar unas de las primeras fotografías al “hombre de los hielos”, encontrado en la zona fronteriza entre Italia y Austria en 1991. Ha atravesado la Antártida, el desierto de Taklamakan en Xinjiang y el desierto del Gobi. Ha sido diputado en el Parlamento Europeo por Los Verdes y ha escrito medio centenar de Reinhold Messner, the first man to conquer the summits of the 14 eight-thousanders (the world’s highest summits) without artificial oxygen, and Krzysztof Wielicki, the first to climb 3 eight- thousanders in winter, are an honour to this sport and an example of the will to overcome. Reinhold Messner (Funes, Bolzano, Italy, 1944), with his ascent to Lhotse in 1986, became the first man to conquer the 14 summits of more than eight thousand metres that exist on the planet. His first eight-thousander was Nanga Parbat. This was followed by Manaslu, Hidden Peak/Gasherbrum 1, Gasherbrum II, Nanga Parbat (1978), Everest, K-2, Everest once again (1980, solo) and Sisha Pagma, Kangchenjunga, Annapurna, Broad Peak, Cho Oyu, Dhaulagiri, the two Gasherbrum in the early 1980s and Lhotse, his fourteenth eight-thousander. He was commissioned to take one of the first photographs of the mummy known as “the Iceman”, found in the border area between Italy and Austria in 1991. Messner has also crossed Antarctica, the Taklamakan Desert in Xinjiang and the Gobi Desert.
