Fundador de la ONG Mountain Wildernerss, dedicada a la conservación de los espacios naturales, a través de la Messner Mountain Foundation ayuda a los habitantes de las zonas montañosas de todo el mundo. También ha puesto en marcha el Messner Mountain Museum, en Bozen, dedicado a la historia del montañismo. Krzysztof Wielicki (Szklarka Przygodzicka, Polonia, 1950), símbolo del alpinismo polaco, ha llevado a cabo hitos históricos: es el quinto hombre en el mundo que ha conquistado los 14 ochomiles y el primero en ascender en invierno tres cumbres de más de ocho mil metros: el Everest, junto a Leszek Cichy, el Kangchenjunga, junto a Jerzy Kukuczka y el Lhotse, en solitario. En 2018 organizó y dirigió la expedición al K2, único ochomil sin conquistar en invierno, que se tuvo que suspender por mal tiempo. Durante este intento, la expedición de Wielicki protagonizó el rescate en el Nanga Parbat de Elisabeth Revol, a la que lograron poner a salvo, y de Tomek Mackiewicz, por el que no se pudo hacer nada. Wielicki realizó la primera ascensión en un solo día a un ochomil, al coronar el Broad Peak, y abrió una nueva vía para subir al Manaslu. En 1993 ascendió al Shisha Pangma en solitario por una nueva ruta. Además de sus logros como alpinista, sus colegas destacan sus valores como ser humano, su compañerismo y su capacidad de liderazgo para afrontar retos en la montaña. Dedica gran parte de su tiempo a divulgar los valores del alpinismo y a orientar a aficionados a este deporte sobre técnicas y estrategias a seguir en la montaña. He was the founder of Mountain Wilderness, an NGO dedicated to the conservation of natural areas and, through the Messner Mountain Foundation, helps the inhabitants of mountainous areas around the world. He has also launched the Messner Mountain Museum in Bozen, dedicated to the history of mountaineering. Krzysztof Wielicki (Szklarka Przygodzicka, Poland, 1950), a symbol of Polish mountaineering, accomplished historical milestones such as having been the fifth man in the world to have conquered the planet’s 14 eight-thousanders and having made the first ascents in winter to the summits of three mountains of over eight thousand metres in height: Mount Everest, together with Leszek Cichy; Kangchenjunga, together with Jerzy Kukuczka; and Lhotse, solo. In 2018, he organized and led the expedition to K2, the only eight-thousander still to be conquered in winter, although the climb had to be suspended due to bad weather. During this attempt, Wielicki’s expedition featured in the operation on Nanga Parbat to rescue Elisabeth Revol, whom they managed to save, and Tomek Mackiewicz, for whom they could do nothing. Wielicki made the first ascent in a single day to an eight-thousander, crowning Broad Peak, and that same year opened up a new route to climb Manaslu. In 1993, he ascended Shisha Pangma solo via a new route. In addition to his achievements as a climber, his colleagues highlight his values as a human being, his companionship and his leadership skills when faced with challenges in the mountains. Wielicki dedicates a large part of his time to spreading the values of mountaineering and to advising practitioners of this sport on techniques and strategies to follow in the mountains. He holds the Lowell Thomas Award.
