In addition to his public vision of justice, he stands out for his criticism of the excesses of the logic of the market.” Premio Princesa de Asturias de Ciencias Sociales Princess of Asturias Award for Social Sciences MICHAEL J. SANDEL Michael J. Sandel (Minessota, EE. UU., 1953) se doctoró en Filosofía Política en 1981 en Oxford y ostenta la cátedra Anne T. and Robert M. Bass en Harvard. Representante destacado de la teoría comunitarista, ha logrado llevar la reflexión a un público global planteando cuestiones éticas en debates abiertos y públicos. Su línea de pensamiento filosófico consiste en la defensa de una justicia orientada al bien común en la que los gobiernos puedan intervenir para evitar los excesos de la economía de mercado y las desigualdades sociales. Sus reflexiones quedaron expuestas en libros como El liberalismo y los límites de la justicia (1982), Justicia. ¿Hacemos lo que debemos? (2009) y Lo que el dinero no puede comprar: los límites morales del mercado (2012). Sandel es “tal vez el catedrático más prominente de América”, según The Washington Post . Sus clases y conferencias se basan en el método socrático y su objetivo es que la juventud utilice más la razón y se aleje de comportamientos relacionados solo con el beneficio económico y los intereses personales. Doctor honoris causa por las universidades de Utrecht y Brandeis y miembro de la Academia Americana de las Artes y las Ciencias, en 2008 se le concedió el Premio de la Asociación Americana de Ciencia Política. En 2010, la revista China Newsweek lo nombró la figura extranjera más influyente del año en ese país. Michael J. Sandel (Minnesota, USA, 1953) received his PhD in Political Philosophy in 1981 from Oxford and is currently the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Professor at Harvard. A leading advocate of communitarian theory, he has managed to extend thinking on this subject to a global audience, posing ethical questions in open, public debates. His line of philosophical thinking consists in advocating justice that serves the common good, in which governments can intervene to avoid the excesses of the market economy and social inequalities. His thinking has been set out in the following books: Liberalism and the Limits of Justice (1982), Justice. What’s the Right Thing to Do? (2009) and What Money Can’t Buy: The Moral Limits of Markets (2012). According to The Washington Post , Sandel is “perhaps the most prominent university professor from the USA”. His classes and talks are based on the Socratic method of instruction. Their aim is for young people to use reasoning to a greater extent and to avoid behaviour related solely to economic profit and personal interests. He holds honorary degrees from Utrecht University and Brandeis University and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
