LAUREATES 28 Trayectoria Background “Por su dedicación, durante más de seis décadas, a la exploración e investigación de los océanos, el conocimiento de los fondos marinos y la conservación integral de los mares, que se ha convertido en uno de los desafíos medioambientales de nuestro tiempo”. “For her dedication over more than six decades to exploring and researching the oceans, to knowledge of the seabed and to the integrated conservation of the seas, which has become one of the environmental challenges of our time.” Sylvia A. Earle (New Jersey, USA, 1935) graduated from Florida State University and earned her PhD from Duke University, carrying out research at the California Academy of Sciences and the University of California at Berkeley, the Radcliffe Institute and Harvard University. She has been a member of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Oceans and the Atmosphere and founded Deep Ocean Engineering and Deep Ocean Exploration and Research. She was chief scientist of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and is currently Rosemary and Roger Enrico Chair for Ocean Exploration, explorer-in-residence of the National Geographic Society and founder president of SEAlliance/Mission Blue. Known as ‘Her Deepness’, she has participated in over a hundred expeditions worldwide and has more than 7,000 hours of research-related diving under her belt. During the Tektite Project, she headed the first team of ‘aquanaut’ women, who lived for two weeks at a depth of 18 metres off the Virgin Islands. She also set a record for solo diving at 1,000 metres. She led the Sustainable Seas Expeditions programme to study the US National Marine Sanctuaries and the cataloguing of others, called ‘Hope Spots’, via Mission Blue. Holder of more than 25 honorary degrees and named a ‘Living Legend’ by the US Library of Congress, she was called a ‘Hero for the Planet’ by Time magazine. Sylvia A. Earle (Nueva Jersey, EE.
