LAUREATES 16 Trayectoria Background Salman Amin Khan (Nueva Orleans, EE.UU., 1976) es licenciado en Matemáticas, Ingeniería y Ciencias Informáticas por el Massachusetts Institute of Technology y máster en Dirección de Empresas en Harvard, tras el que trabajó como analista financiero. En 2004 se ofreció para ayudar a su prima con las matemáticas a través del teléfono, con el apoyo de la informática, y después empezó a supervisar a distancia los avances de varios familiares. En 2006 publicó en YouTube vídeos explicativos de sus lecciones y en 2008 creó la Khan Academy, organización sin ánimo de lucro a la que se ha dedicado plenamente desde 2009, cuando presentó su renuncia en el fondo de inversión para el que trabajaba. Aunque el contenido estuvo inicialmente dirigido a los estudiantes, poco a poco se ha convertido en una herramienta de gran utilidad para profesores que buscan complementar sus lecciones en el aula con material adicional. Su lema es: “Solo tienes que saber una cosa: puedes aprender cualquier cosa”. Presente en más de 190 países, con cerca de sesenta millones de usuarios registrados, cuenta con unos 20 000 vídeos disponibles, visualizados más de 1400 millones de veces. La plataforma web está disponible en cinco idiomas y se traduce a 36 idiomas. Fomenta el concepto de “clase invertida” ( flipped classroom ), para darle la vuelta al método tradicional, animando a los estudiantes a preparar la teoría en sus casas. Salman Amin Khan (New Orleans, USA, 1976) graduated in Mathematics, Engineering and Computer Science from MIT and obtained a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Harvard University, after which he began working as a financial analyst. In 2004, he offered to help his cousin with her Maths schoolwork by telephone with the support of some basic computer tools and, within a short time, Khan was remotely monitoring the progress of several relatives with similar problems at school. In 2006, he began publishing videos on the YouTube platform explaining his lessons and in 2008 created the Khan Academy, a non-profit organization to which he has devoted himself full time since 2009. Although the content was initially aimed at students, it has gradually become a very useful tool for teachers who wish to complement their classroom lessons with additional material. His motto is: “You only have to know one thing: you can learn anything.” The Khan Academy is currently found in more than 190 countries, with nearly sixty million registered users. It also has around 20 000 videos available that have been viewed more than 1400 million times. The Academy’s web platform is available in six languages and its videos have been translated into 36 languages.
