Sandra Myrna Díaz (Bell Ville, Argentina, 1961) se graduó en Biología en 1984 en la Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, donde se doctoró en 1989. Entre 1985 y 1991 fue becaria en el Centro de Ecología y Recursos Naturales Renovables de dicha universidad y realizó una estancia posdoctoral en la Universidad de Sheffield. En 1993 regresó como profesora a la Universidad de Córdoba, donde actualmente es investigadora del Instituto Multidisciplinario de Biología Vegetal, entre otros cargos. También ha participado en actividades e informes del Panel Intergubernamental de Cambio Climático y de la Convención Internacional de Diversidad Biológica. Referencia científica en el área de la ecología y especializada en botánica, participó en el desarrollo de una herramienta metodológica para cuantificar los efectos y beneficios de la biodiversidad de las plantas y la ecología vegetal de los ecosistemas y su aprovechamiento humano en forma de combustible, materiales, medicinas, tintes, alimentación, protección hídrica y otras aportaciones, así como el papel de la biodiversidad para contrarrestar el cambio global, por ejemplo, mediante el secuestro de carbono atmosférico. Es miembro electo, entre otras, de la Academia Nacional de Ciencias de Estados Unidos, la Academia de Ciencias de Francia y de the Royal Society. Entre sus numerosos galardones destacan los premios Konex de Platino en Biología y Ecología, el Zayed al Liderazgo en Medio Ambiente, el Bernardo Houssay y el Ramón Margalef de Ecología. Sandra Myrna Díaz (Bell Ville, Argentina, 1961) graduated with a degree in Biology from the National University of Córdoba in 1984, obtaining her PhD in 1989. Between 1985 and 1991, she was a research fellow at the Centre for Ecology and Renewable Natural Resources at the aforementioned university and subsequently joined the University of Sheffield. She returned to the University of Córdoba in 1993, where, among other posts, she is Professor of Community and Ecosystem Ecology and a senior researcher at the Multidisciplinary Institute of Plant Biology. She has also participated in reports and activities carried out by both the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the International Convention on Biological Diversity. Specializing in botany and considered a reference figure in the field of ecology, she has participated in the development of a methodological tool to quantify the effects and benefits of plant biodiversity and the plant ecology of ecosystems and their exploitation for fuel, materials, medicines, dyes, food, water protection and other contributions, as well as the role of biodiversity in counteracting global change, e.g., through atmospheric carbon sequestration. She is an elected member of the United States National Academy of Sciences and the French Academy of Sciences, as well as an elected Foreign Member of the Royal Society. She has received numerous awards, most notably the Platinum Konex Prize in Biology and Ecology, the Zayed Prize for the Environment, the Bernardo Houssay Award and the Ramon Margalef Prize in Ecology.
