LAUREATES 24 Fragmento del acta del jurado Excerpt from the Minutes of the Jury Trayectoria Background «Por su excepcional trayectoria como piloto, en una carrera espléndida, diversa e innovadora de más de tres décadas en la élite». “For his exceptional performance as a racing driver throughout an outstanding, diverse and ground-breaking career spanning more than three decades among the elite of his sport.” Carlos Sainz Cenamor (Madrid, España, 12 de abril de 1962), varias veces campeón del mundo, está considerado como uno de los mejores pilotos de rally del panorama internacional. Con una trayectoria de más de tres décadas, inició su carrera deportiva en 1980 y en 1981 ganó la Copa Seat Panda de rally y la Copa Renault Iniciación. Se convirtió en 2010 en el primer español en ganar el Dakar en la categoría de coches, título revalidado en 2018 y 2020. En 1987 se proclamó campeón de España, participó en tres carreras del Mundial de Rally y, al año siguiente, repitió el título nacional. En 1990 y 1992 logró sendos campeonatos del mundo. En 1994, 1995 y 1998 repitió el segundo puesto y en 1997, 2000, 2002 y 2003 ocupó el tercer puesto final. En 2004 se convirtió, con 26 victorias, en el piloto de rally que más pruebas ha ganado en la historia del campeonato del mundo. En 2004 anunció su retirada, pero volvió a la competición en el Mundial de 2005 y en 2007 logró un tercer título de campeón del mundo. Sainz está involucrado en actividades de apoyo a jóvenes promesas a través de varias iniciativas, como la creación en 2000 del Carlos Sainz Junior Team. Poseedor de la insignia de oro y brillantes de la Real Federación Española de Automovilismo, ha recibido la Orden Olímpica del Comité Olímpico Español, la Gran Cruz de la Real Orden del Mérito Deportivo y el Premio Influential a la trayectoria profesional. Carlos Sainz Cenamor (Madrid, Spain, 12th April 1962), several times world champion, is considered one of the top rally drivers on the international scene. With a career spanning more than three decades among the motorsport elite, Sainz started out in the world of rallies in 1980 and won his first race, the Seat Panda Rally Cup, in 1981, followed by the Renault Beginners Cup. In 2010 he became the first Spaniard to win the Dakar Rally in the cars class, a feat he repeated in 2018 and 2020. In 1987, he won the Spanish Rally Championship and participated in three World Rally races, as well as being crowned Spanish champion once again the following year. He became world champion in 1990 and 1992. He finished runner-up in the 1994, 1995 and 1998 World Rally Championships and third in 1997, 2000, 2002 and 2003. In 2004, he garnered his 26th victory, which made him the rally driver to have won the most rallies in the history of the world championship. He announced his retirement in 2004, but returned to competition in the 2005 World Championship and rounded off his record with a third world championship title in 2007. Sainz is also involved in activities to support up-and- coming drivers through various initiatives, such as the creation in 2000 of the Carlos Sainz Junior Team. He has received the gold and diamond insignia of the Royal Spanish Automobile Federation, the Olympic Order of the Spanish Olympic Committee, the Grand Cross of Spain’s Royal Order of Sporting Merit and the Influential award for his professional career.
