LAUREATES 34 Fragmento del acta del jurado Excerpt from the Minutes of the Jury Trayectoria Background Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance , es un consorcio internacional compuesto por entidades públicas y privadas cuyo objetivo principal consiste en facilitar el acceso a vacunas de enfermedades infecciosas en los países menos desarrollados. Gavi (siglas del inglés Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization) calcula que ha logrado la inmunización de más de 760 millones de niños y que su labor ha evitado la muerte de más de 13 millones de personas. Creado a partir del impulso de la Fundación Bill y Melinda Gates y con el apoyo de Unicef, la OMS y el Banco Mundial, fue presentada en Davos en 2000. Ha conseguido que la mitad de la población infantil del planeta esté protegida por rutinas de vacunación que incluyen, entre otras, la vacuna pentavalente y las del rotavirus, neumococo, meningococo, cólera, tifus, sarampión, rubeola, fiebre amarilla y polio. Con instrumentos financieros como el International Finance Facility for Immunisation o el Advance Market Commitment, ha recaudado millones de dólares e incentivado un avance rápido de la investigación y producción de nuevas vacunas y su introducción en el mercado, controlando el precio y el volumen adecuado de producción. Gavi contribuye de manera directa a la consecución de 14 de los 17 Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible de la ONU y tiene como objetivo alcanzar los 1100 millones de menores inmunizados en 2025. En 2019 recibió el Premio Lasker-Bloomberg de Servicio Público (EE. UU.). Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance , is an international consortium made up of various public and private entities whose main objective is to facilitate access to vaccines against infectious diseases in the least developed countries. Gavi (Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization) estimates that it has immunized more than 760 million children worldwide and that its work has prevented the death of more than thirteen million people. Launched at the World Economic Forum in Davos in 2000, Gavi was created on the initiative of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, with the support of UNICEF, the World Health Organization and the World Bank. It has ensured that practically half of the global population of children is protected via vaccination routines, including the pentavalent vaccine, as well as the rotavirus, pneumococcus, meningococcal, cholera, typhus, measles, rubella, yellow fever and polio vaccines. Financial and institutional instruments such as the International Finance Facility for Immunisation and the Advance Market Commitment have made it possible to raise billions of dollars and foster rapid progress in the research and production of new vaccines and their introduction in the market, controlling both the price and adequate volumes of production. Gavi’s work contributes directly to the achievement of 14 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals and aims to reach the figure of 1.1 billion immunized minors by 2025.
