A lo largo de seis décadas, su sólido e inagotable compromiso con el feminismo, su ponderación y su voluntad de incluir todas las voces han impulsado la igualdad como uno de los valores fundamentales de la humanidad». “An essential iconic reference within the women’s rights movement, since the sixties Gloria Steinem’s activism —marked by independence and rigour— has been a driving force for one of the major revolutions of contemporary society. Over six decades, her firm, boundless commitment to feminism, her deep reflection and her willingness to include all voices have promoted equality as one of humanity’s fundamental values.” Gloria Steinem (Toledo, EE.UU., 25 de marzo de 1934) estudió en Massachusetts y se trasladó gracias a una beca a la India. En 1960 se estableció en Nueva York y empezó a trabajar para la revista Help! Escribió para Esquire y The New York Times Magazine , entre otras publicaciones. En 1972 cofundó Ms. , la primera revista feminista, además de ser también la primera creada y dirigida exclusivamente por mujeres. Participó en distintos foros feministas y en la fundación de organizaciones como el National Women’s Political Caucus, la Ms. Foundation for Women, la Women’s Action Alliance, el Women and AIDS Fund y el Women’s Media Center. Ha escrito, entre otras obras, The Beach Book , Marilyn , Doing Sixty & Seventy y My Life on the Road . Le han concedido, entre otros, el Richard C. Holbrooke Distinguished Achievement Award, el National Gay Rights Advocates Award y el Eleanor Roosevelt Val-Kill Medal Award. Ha sido reconocida con el primer doctorado en Justicia Humana del Simmons College. Barack Obama le concedió la Medalla Presidencial de la Libertad y el alcalde de Nueva York, Bill de Blasio, proclamó el 31 de marzo de 2019 como Día de Gloria Steinem. Gloria Steinem (Toledo, USA, 25th March 1934) studied in Massachusetts and subsequently moved to India on a fellowship. She settled in New York in 1960 and began working for Help! magazine. She wrote for Esquire and The New York Times Magazine , among other periodicals. In 1972, she co-founded Ms. , the first feminist magazine, which was also the first to be created and run exclusively by women. She took part in different forums and in the founding of women’s organizations such as the National Women’s Political Caucus, the Ms. Foundation for Women, the Women’s Action Alliance, the Women and AIDS Fund, and the Women’s Media Center. Among other books, she has written The Beach Book , Marilyn , Doing Sixty & Seventy and My Life on the Road . She has received the Richard C. Holbrooke Distinguished Achievement Award, the National Gay Rights Advocates Award and the Eleanor Roosevelt Val-Kill Medal, among other distinctions. She was distinguished with the first doctorate in Human Justice from Simmons College and was bestowed with the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio proclaimed March 31, 2019 as Gloria Steinem Day.
