A lo largo de su dilatada y brillante trayectoria, que la ha llevado a participar en cinco Juegos Paralímpicos y en la que se ha mantenido en lo más alto de la competición hasta la actualidad, ha configurado un excepcional palmarés solo equiparable a su profundo, activo y valiente compromiso social». “Teresa is an extraordinary athlete and an icon of the international Paralympic movement. Throughout her long and brilliant career, which has led her to participate in five Paralympic Games and in which she continues to figure among the elite, she has established an exceptional track record only comparable to her profound, active and courageous commitment to social issues.” TERESA PERALES Teresa Perales (Zaragoza, España, 29 de diciembre de 1975), amante del deporte desde niña, practicaba el kárate hasta que a los diecinueve años perdió la movilidad en las piernas. Se diplomó en Fisioterapia y se formó en coaching profesional, al tiempo que encontró en la natación un nuevo deporte en el que competir. Ejemplo de superación para millones de personas con discapacidad, es una de las deportistas paralímpicas en activo más laureadas, con un total de 43 medallas en campeonatos europeos, 22 en los mundiales y 27 medallas paralímpicas. Ha sido miembro del Consejo de Atletas del IPC (Comité Paralímpico Internacional, por sus siglas en inglés), diputada en las Cortes de Aragón y directora general de Atención a la Dependencia del Gobierno de Aragón. Colabora con diversas ONG y ha publicado Mi vida sobre ruedas y La fuerza de un sueño . Doctora honoris causa por la Universidad Miguel Hernández, es miembro de la Real Orden del Mérito Deportivo y ha obtenido la medalla al Mérito Deportivo del Gobierno de Aragón, el Premio Infanta Sofía de los Nacionales del Deporte y la Medalla de Oro al Mérito en el Trabajo. Posee la Orden Olímpica del COE, es miembro del Consejo Asesor de la Fundación Princesa de Girona y patrona de la Fundación Sanitas. Teresa Perales (Zaragoza, Spain, 29th December 1975), a lover of sports since childhood, practiced karate until losing the use of her legs at the age of 19. She graduated in Physiotherapy and studied professional coaching, while finding in swimming a new sport in which to compete. An example of the ability to overcome obstacles for millions of people with disabilities, she is one of the most decorated Paralympic athletes still competing, with a total of 43 medals in European Championships, 22 in World Championships and 27 in the Paralympic Games. She has sat on the Athletes’ Council of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), been Member of the Aragón Regional Parliament and served as the Regional Government of Aragón’s Director General for Dependent Adult Care. She collaborates with various NGOs, has published the books My Life on Wheels and The Strength of a Dream and holds an honorary degree from Miguel Hernández University. She has been distinguished with Spain’s Royal Order of Sports Merit, the Government of Aragón’s Sports Merit medal, the Spanish National Sports Championships Infanta Sofía Award, the Gold Medal for Merit at Work and the Olympic Order of the Spanish Olympic Committee.
