LAUREATES 26 Trayectoria Background Katalin Karikó (Szolnok, Hungría, 17 de enero de 1955) estudió Biología en la Universidad de Szeged, donde se doctoró en Bioquímica. En la Universidad de Temple, en Filadelfia, continuó su trabajo sobre las posibilidades terapéuticas del ARN. Se incorporó después a BioNTech, donde es vicepresidenta sénior, y comprobó que recubrir las moléculas de ARN con partículas lipídicas era una buena estrategia para su transporte y protección. En 2020 recibió el Premio Rosenstiel junto con Weissmann y fue nombrada doctora honoris causa por la Universidad de Szeged en 2021. Drew Weissman (Massachusetts, EE.UU ., 7 de septiembre de 1959) obtuvo su grado y máster en la Universidad Brandeis (EE.UU .) y se especializó en Bioquímica y Enzimología. Se doctoró por la Universidad de Boston y completó su residencia en el hospital Beth Israel de Boston. Continuó sus estudios en los Institutos Nacionales de Salud y en la Universidad de Pensilvania trabajó en el estudio del ARN y el sistema inmunitario. Es profesor de medicina en la Escuela Perelman de Pensilvania. Drew Weissman (Massachusetts, USA, 7th September 1959) earned his Bachelor and Master’s degrees from Brandeis University (USA), where he majored in biochemistry and enzymology, and his PhD from Boston University. He completed his residency at Beth Israel Hospital, Boston. He continued his studies at the National Institutes of Health and the University of Pennsylvania, where his work focused on the study of RNA and the immune system. He is currently a Professor of Medicine at UPenn’s Perelman School of Medicine. Katalin Karikó (Szolnok, Hungary, 17th January 1955) graduated in Biology from the University of Szeged and subsequently earned her PhD in Biochemistry. She continued her research work into the therapeutic possibilities of RNA at Temple University (Philadelphia) and then joined BioNTech, where she holds the position of Senior Vice President. She discovered that coating RNA molecules with lipid particles was a good strategy for their delivery and protection.
