UU., 7 de febrero de 1950) estudió Bioquímica en la Universidad Estatal de Michigan, donde se doctoró. Después de un trabajo posdoctoral en la Universidad de Virginia, se unió a Syntex Research, donde desarrolló la tecnología de lipofección. En 1988 se convirtió en director de desarrollo de la empresa Vical Inc., de la que fue fundador. Sus hallazgos llevaron al desarrollo de las vacunas de ADN. Actualmente, es director del Centro de Investigación y Desarrollo de Vacunas de la Universidad de California en Irvine y del Laboratorio y Centro de Capacitación de Microarrays de Proteínas. Uğur Şahin (Alejandreta, Turquía, 19 de septiembre de 1965) estudió Medicina en la Universidad de Colonia, donde se doctoró. Trabajó como internista, hematólogo y oncólogo y después se trasladó a la Universidad de Maguncia (Alemania). En 2001 cofundó Ganymed Pharmaceuticals. En 2008 creó junto con Özlem Türeci, BioNTech, de la que es director ejecutivo, y en 2010, el instituto de investigación traslacional TRON. Además de trabajar en la vacuna contra la COVID-19, se ha centrado en la identificación de nuevas dianas para la inmunoterapia en el cáncer. Ha sido galardonado, entre otros, con el Premio al Mérito de la Sociedad Estadounidense de Oncología Clínica, el Premio Alemán del Cáncer y el Nacional Alemán de Sostenibilidad, y ha recibido la Cruz de Caballero Comendador de la Orden al Mérito de la República Federal de Alemania. Philip Felgner (Frankenmuth, USA, 7th February 1950) graduated in Biochemistry from Michigan State University, where he also earned his Master’s degree. After postdoctoral work at the University of Virginia, he joined Syntex Research, where he developed lipofection technology. In 1988, he became Director of Product Development and founded Vical Incorporated. Felgner’s findings led to the development of DNA vaccines. He is currently Director of the University of California at Irvine (UCI) Center for Vaccine Research and Development and the Protein Microarray Laboratory and Training Facility. Uğur Şahin (Alexandretta, Turkey, 19th September 1965) graduated in Medicine from the University of Cologne, where he earned his PhD. He worked as a doctor of internal medicine, haematology and oncology before moving to Mainz University (Germany), where he co-founded Ganymed Pharmaceuticals in 2001. He co-founded BioNTech in 2008, together with Özlem Türeci, and has served as the company’s CEO. He subsequently founded the translational oncology research institute TRON in 2010. In addition to working on the COVID-19 vaccine, Ş ahin has focused on identifying new targets for immunotherapy in cancer. He has received the Merit Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the German Cancer Award and the National German Sustainability Award and is holder of the Knight Commander’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. «Es un gran honor que su jurado haya decidido seleccionarme para este prestigioso premio.
