LAUREATES 16 Fragmento del acta del jurado Excerpt from the Minutes of the Jury Trayectoria Background «Michnik, cuya concepción de Europa contribuyó a asentar en su país los valores democráticos, constituye además hoy en día un símbolo de la libertad de expresión y del humanismo, así como un ejemplo ético de resistencia frente a las amenazas autoritarias». “Michnik, whose conception of Europe helped establish democratic values in his country, is also today a symbol of freedom of expression and humanism, as well as an ethical role model of resistance against authoritarian threats.” Adam Michnik (Varsovia, Polonia, 1946) se formó en Historia en la universidad de la capital polaca, donde tuvo problemas por participar en protestas, hasta que fue expulsado en 1968. Finalmente, se graduó a distancia por la Universidad Adam Mickiewicz de Pozna ń . Encarcelado en varias ocasiones, fue uno de los fundadores del movimiento KOR (el Comité para la Defensa de los Trabajadores) y miembro de Solidaridad. Llegó a ser diputado y fundó el periódico independiente Gazeta Wyborcza , del que sigue siendo redactor jefe. Desde sus páginas, siempre ha defendido el diálogo por encima de toda clase de divisiones. Es uno de los más destacados defensores de los derechos humanos en Polonia y está considerado entre los personajes fundamentales en la recuperación de la democracia en el país, además de un extraordinario periodista. Es autor de libros sobre temas políticos e históricos y ensayos. Doctor honoris causa por varias universidades, es comandante de la Orden de Bernardo O'Higgins de Chile y ha recibido la Cruz de Oficial del Mérito de la República de Hungría, la Gran Cruz del Mérito de Alemania, la Medalla Goethe y la Legión de Honor francesa, entre otros reconocimientos, así como el Premio de Derechos Humanos Robert F. Adam Michnik (Warsaw, Poland, 1946) studied History at university in the Polish capital until he was expelled in 1968 due to his participation in protests. He eventually graduated with a distance degree from the Adam Mickiewicz University in Pozna ń . Imprisoned several times, he was one of the founders of the Workers’ Defence Committee (KOR movement) and a member of the Solidarity union. He became a member of parliament and founded the independent newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza , of which he remains editor-in-chief. From its pages, he has always defended dialogue over and above all kinds of divisions. Michnik is one of the best known and most prominent defenders of human rights in Poland and is considered one of the key figures in the recovery of democracy in the country, as well as an outstanding journalist. He is the author of books on political and historical issues and essays. Holder of honorary degrees from several universities, he is Commander of Chile’s Order of Bernardo O’Higgins and has received the Officer’s Cross of Merit from the Republic of Hungary, Germany’s Grand Cross of Merit, the Goethe Medal and the French Legion of Honour, among other distinctions. He has likewise received the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award, the Freedom Prize of the Lithuanian Parliament, the Ortega y Gasset Prize, and the Francisco Cerecedo Award for Journalism.
