As a result of the intensity and continuity of research in the field, his work (…) constitutes an exemplary milestone in the scientific development of archaeology and a fruitful dialogue with the past, between different cultures and between social and human sciences.” EDUARDO MATOS MOCTEZUMA Eduardo Matos Moctezuma (Ciudad de México, México, 1940) estudió Arqueología en la Escuela Nacional de Antropología e Historia —donde fue catedrático y dirigió el Seminario Regional Mexica y el Laboratorio de Materiales e Historia de México— y obtuvo su doctorado por la UNAM. Dirigió el Centro de Investigaciones y Estudios Superiores en Antropología Social del Museo Nacional de Antropología y del Museo del Templo Mayor. Con más de quinientas publicaciones, entre los proyectos más relevantes que ha dirigido se encuentran la investigación integral de la Tula prehispánica, colonial y moderna, Teotihuacán, donde excavó la pirámide del Sol y fundó el Museo de la Cultura Teotihuacana y el Centro de Estudios Teotihuacanos, y la ciudad de Tenochtitlán, su recinto sagrado y el Templo Mayor. Doctor honoris causa por la Universidad de Colorado y la UNAM, es Caballero de la Orden Nacional al Mérito, de la Orden de las Palmas Académicas y Oficial de la Orden de las Artes y las Letras de Francia y es miembro de distintas sociedades, academias e institutos. Ha recibido numerosas distinciones y, en 2017, la Universidad de Harvard creó una cátedra con su nombre. Eduardo Matos Moctezuma (Mexico City, Mexico, 1940) graduated in Archaeology from the National School of Anthropology and History –where he held a chair, in addition to heading the Seminario Regional Mexica and the Laboratory of Materials and History of Mexico– and obtained his PhD from the UNAM. He has been director of the National Museum of Anthropology’s Center for Research and Higher Studies in Social Anthropology and the Templo Mayor Museum. The author of over five hundred publications, some of the most relevant projects he has headed comprise the comprehensive investigation of pre-Columbian, colonial and modern Tula sites: Teotihuacan, where he excavated the Pyramid of the Sun and founded the Museum of Teotihuacan Culture and the Center for Teotihuacan Studies; and the city of Tenochtitlan, its sacred precinct and the Templo Mayor. The holder of honorary doctorates from the University of Colorado and UNAM, Matos is Chevalier of France’s National Order of Merit and Order of Academic Palms, and Officier of its Order of Arts and Letters.
