LAUREATES 32 Fragmento del acta del jurado Excerpt from the Minutes of the Jury Trayectoria Background Shigeru Ban (Tokio, Japón, 1957) estudió en el Instituto de Arquitectura del Sur de California y después se trasladó a la Escuela de Arquitectura The Cooper Union de Nueva York, donde se licenció compaginando sus clases universitarias con el trabajo en el estudio de Arata Isozaki. En 1985 fundó en Tokio su propia firma, que también tiene presencia en Nueva York y París. Considerado el gran activista de la arquitectura, Ban ha alcanzado prestigio internacional por ser capaz de dar respuestas rápidas y eficaces en forma de refugios y viviendas temporales a situaciones extremas, provocadas en su mayoría por catástrofes naturales, con diseños de alta calidad hechos a base de materiales reutilizables, como el cartón, el plástico, la madera, la tela y el papel, y en los que la privacidad y la estética son factores importantes pues, en su opinión, contribuyen a mejorar el estado psicológico de sus habitantes. Asesor del Alto Comisionado de las Naciones Unidas para los Refugiados, fundó Voluntary Architect’s Network (VAN) y ha recibido, entre otros, el Premio Pritzker, la Medalla de Oro de la Academia de Arquitectura de Francia y los premios Arnold W. Brunner Memorial y el AIJ del Instituto de Arquitectura Japonés. Es doctor honoris causa por la Universidad Técnica de Múnich y la New School (EE. UU.). Shigeru Ban (Tokyo, Japan, 1957) studied at the Southern California Institute of Architecture and subsequently moved to New York to continue his training at The Cooper Union School of Architecture, where he graduated combining his university studies with working in Arata Isozaki’s studio. In 1985, he opened his own studio in Tokyo, and subsequently opened offices in New York and Paris. Considered the foremost activist of architecture, Ban has achieved international prestige for being able to provide shelters and temporary housing as a rapid, effective response to extreme and devastating situations caused mostly by natural disasters. This response takes the form of high-quality designs based on unconventional and reusable materials, such as cardboard, plastic, wood and paper, in which privacy and aesthetics are important factors, because, in Ban’s opinion, they contribute to improving the psychological wellbeing of their occupants. Consultant to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, he established the Voluntary Architect’s Network (VAN). Among other distinctions, he has received the Pritzker Architecture Prize, the Gold Medal from the French Academy of Architecture, the Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize and the Architecture Institute of Japan (AIJ) Prize.
