The result is an original mix of political realism, humanism and liberal idealism, in which concern for the values of freedom, human rights, tolerance and the safeguarding of institutions comprise his fundamental concern.” Michael Ignatieff (Toronto, Canadá, 1947) se licenció en Historia en Toronto y se doctoró por la Universidad de Harvard. Profesor asistente en la Columbia Británica, ejerció también la docencia en la Universidad Central Europea en Budapest y Viena, de la que fue rector y en la que aún ejerce, en el King’s College de Cambridge, en la Universidad de Oxford y en la École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales de París. Fue elegido miembro de la Cámara de los Comunes del parlamento canadiense por el Partido Liberal, del que fue presidente. Destaca por su defensa de los derechos humanos y ha aportado ideas para superar las diferencias étnicas y religiosas, el análisis de los conflictos morales frente al relativismo cultural y la oposición a los nacionalismos violentos, entre otros temas. Ha escrito, entre otros ensayos, El mal menor , Las virtudes cotidianas y En busca de consuelo , así como obras de teatro y novelas. Caballero de la Orden de las Palmas Académicas de Francia y miembro de la Orden de Canadá, es doctor honoris causa por trece universidades y ha recibido diversos premios internacionales. Michael Ignatieff (Toronto, Canada, 1947) graduated in History from the University of Toronto and subsequently earned a PhD fromHarvard University. After working as an assistant professor at the University of British Columbia, he went on to teach at: the Central European University in Budapest and Vienna, of which he was rector and where he still lectures; King’s College, Cambridge; the University of Oxford; and the School of Advanced Studies in Social Sciences (EHESS) in Paris. He was elected to the House of Commons of the Canadian Parliament for the Liberal Party, of which he became leader. He is known for his defence of human rights and has contributed ideas for overcoming ethnic and religious differences, the analysis of moral conflicts in the face of cultural relativism and opposition to violent nationalism, among other topics. His written works include essays, such as The Lesser Evil , The Ordinary Virtues and On Consolation , as well as plays and novels. Knight of the Order of the Academic Palms of France and member of the Order of Canada, he holds honorary degrees from thirteen universities and has received various international awards.
