En 1985 fue nombrado director ejecutivo del Banco Mundial. Fue también director general del Tesoro italiano y vicepresidente para Europa de Goldman Sachs. En 2005 fue nombrado gobernador del Banco de Italia y en 2011 asumió la presidencia del Banco Central Europeo. En 2021 tomó posesión como primer ministro de la República Italiana, cargo del que dimitió en 2022. Durante la crisis de 2008, su declaración de que el BCE haría «lo que fuera necesario» para preservar el euro restauró la confianza de los mercados. Como primer ministro lideró un gobierno de unidad nacional enfocado en gestionar los fondos del programa de recuperación Next Generation EU. Mario Draghi (Rome, Italy, 1947) graduated in Economics fromLa Sapienza University and received his PhD fromMIT. He was appointed Executive Director of theWorld Bank in 1985. He has also served as Director-General of the Italian Treasury and Vice Chairman for Europe at Goldman Sachs. In 2005, he was appointed Governor of the Bank of Italy and in 2011 assumed the presidency of the European Central Bank. In 2021, he took office as Prime Minister of the Italian Republic, a position he resigned from in 2022. During the 2008 crisis, his declaration that the ECB would do “whatever it takes” to preserve the euro restoredmarket confidence. As prime minister, he headed a national unity government focused onmanaging the funds of the Next Generation EU recovery programme. He has promotedmultilateralism, cooperation between Member States and the strengthening of Europe’s role on the global stage, as well as advocating common policies on health, energy transition and digitalization. He has argued for a more unified Europe based on solidarity and for aligning its response to challenges such as the pandemic, climate change and geopolitical conflicts.
