LAUREATES 12 Trayectoria Background “Maestro de generaciones y considerado el mejor director teatral del siglo xx , es uno de los grandes renovadores de las artes escénicas, con montajes de alto compromiso estético y social”. “Considered a mentor by various generations as well as the best theatre director of the 20th century, he is one of the great renovators of the performing arts, whose stagings reveal a high commitment to aesthetics and social issues.” Premio Princesa de Asturias de las Artes Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts PETER BROOK Peter Brook (Londres, 1925) se graduó en Arte en Oxford y realizó sus primeros montajes teatrales con apenas 20 años. Dirigió la Royal Opera House de Covent Garden y el Royal Shakespeare Theatre en Stratford. Fundó y dirige en París el Centro Internacional de Creaciones Teatrales. También dirigió Les Bouffes du Nord. Considerado el mejor director teatral del siglo xx y un renovador del teatro contemporáneo, ha trabajado en escenarios de todo el mundo. De sus obras, que abarcan casi todos los estilos teatrales, destacan títulos como La tempestad (1955), El rey Lear (1962) o Marat-Sade (1964). En 1985 presentó Mahabharata , un montaje teatral de seis horas de duración que supuso su consagración definitiva. Entre sus últimos trabajos se encuentran Battlefield (2015), The Prisoner (2018) y Why? (2019). Es, además, autor de varios libros de crítica teatral, el más afamado, The Empty Space (1968). Ha publicado también sus memorias ( Threads of Time ) y dirigido varias películas. Comandante de la Legión de Honor de Francia y Comandante de la Orden del Imperio Británico, es doctor honoris causa por varias universidades y miembro honorario de la Academia Americana de Artes y Ciencias, entre otras. Además de los numerosos reconocimientos a sus obras —premios Tony, Emmy, Molière, Laurence Olivier, etc.—, ha recibido galardones como el Premio Europa de Teatro (1989), el Praemium Imperiale (Japón, 1997) y el Molière de Honor (Francia, 2011). He has directed both the Royal Opera House Covent Garden (London) and the Royal Shakespeare Theatre (Stratford). He founded the International Centre for Theatre Creation and also directed the Bouffes du Nord theatre. Considered the best theatrical director of the 20th century and one of the great renovators of contemporary theatre, Peter Brook has worked on stages throughout the world. Embracing almost all theatrical styles, his works include titles such as The Tempest (1955), King Lear (1962) and Marat-Sade (1964). In 1985 he presented Mahabharata , a six-hour theatrical production that marked his definitive consecration. His latest works include Battlefield (2015), The Prisoner (2018) and Why? (2019). Brook is also the author of several theatre criticism books including The Empty Space (1968). He has published his memoirs, entitled Threads of Time , and has also directed several films. Commander of the French Legion of Honour and Commander of the Order of the British Empire, Peter Brook is an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, among other such institutions. In addition to the numerous recognitions of his works —Tony, Emmy, Molière, Laurence Olivier Awards, to name a few—, he has received distinctions such as the Europe Theatre Prize (1989), the Praemium Imperiale (Japan, 1997) and the Honorary Molière Award (France, 2011).
