LAUREATES 12 Fragmento del acta del jurado Excerpt from the Minutes of the Jury Trayectoria Background «Se han convertido ya en el símbolo de todas las personas, instituciones y empresas enfrentadas a esta pandemia, reconocido como tal con constantes muestras de agradecimiento y solidaridad no solo por el conjunto de la sociedad española, sino también en el ámbito internacional». “They have become the symbol of all the individuals, institutions and enterprises facing this pandemic, being recognized as such via constant gestures of thanks and solidarity, not only by Spanish society as a whole, but also on the international stage.” The thousands of Spanish health workers in direct contact with patients affected by COVID-19 form the front line in the fight against this disease. Exposed to a high, aggressive viral load, in the face of long working hours, sometimes without suitable equipment or material means, their unconditional dedication represents an exercise in exemplary citizenship and in their vocation to serve. This extensive group has placed itself at the forefront of a fight in which other organizations and enterprises, the Army and the State Security Forces and Corps are also intensely involved. Their efforts have allowed a very high number of cases of infected patients and fatalities to be attended to, even carrying out, beyond their obligations, work of profound humanity when accompanying hospitalized patients and individuals whose relatives could not be present in their final hours of life. This responsibility has placed their own personal health at risk, to the point of being the group that has been most affected by the pandemic in Spain. Having emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan in late 2019, the COVID-19 disease, caused by the SARS- CoV-2 coronavirus, was declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO, 2009 Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation) in March 2020. Spain is one of the countries to have most virulently suffered its impact. The WHO itself has praised the work of Spanish health workers. Los miles de profesionales sanitarios españoles en contacto directo con los pacientes afectados por la COVID-19 conforman la primera línea en la lucha contra esta enfermedad. Expuestos a una alta carga viral, su entrega, haciendo frente a largas jornadas de trabajo sin contar en ocasiones con el equipamiento y los medios materiales adecuados, representa un ejercicio de vocación de servicio y de ejemplaridad ciudadana. Este amplio grupo de profesionales se ha colocado en la vanguardia de un combate en el que están implicadas otras organizaciones, empresas, el Ejército y las fuerzas y cuerpos de seguridad del Estado. Su esfuerzo ha permitido atender un número de casos de infectados y víctimas mortales muy elevado, realizando más allá de sus obligaciones una labor de profunda humanidad al acompañar a enfermos cuyos familiares no podían estar presentes en sus últimas horas de vida y poniendo en riesgo su propia salud, hasta el punto de ser el colectivo más afectado por la pandemia en España. Surgida en la ciudad china de Wuhan a finales de 2019, la COVID-19, causada por el coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, fue declarada pandemia mundial por la OMS (Premio Príncipe de Asturias de Cooperación Internacional 2009) en marzo de 2020. España es uno de los países que con más virulencia han sufrido su impacto. La propia OMS ha alabado la labor de los sanitarios españoles.
