Update of the programme of cultural events featuring the Laureates during the week preceding the 2014 Prince of Asturias Awards Ceremony

The Prince of Asturias Foundation has designed an extensive cultural programme that includes the participation of the Prince of Asturias Laureates in various activities during the week of the Awards Ceremony, which will be held on 24th October in the Campoamor Theatre in Oviedo.
The programme, called “Awards Week”, includes 20 cultural activities in all, to be held in Oviedo, Gijón, Avilés and Villaviciosa starting Tuesday, 21st October. The events featuring the laureates will include working meetings, exhibitions and talks. These cultural events will also count on the participation of professionals, academics and prominent figures from different fields and disciplines from both Spain and abroad.
Since 1996, the Foundation has scheduled different activities in diverse locations in Asturias aimed at making the laureates and their contributions to the world of science, culture or any other field in which they work more accessible to society at large. The laureates will combine the activities with diverse meetings with the press, the schedule for which will be announced in the coming days.
The Regional Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports of the Principality of Asturias, the Principality of Asturias Regional Parliament, Oviedo, Gijón, Avilés and Villaviciosa Municipal Councils and the University of Oviedo have all collaborated in the organization of this series of events.

SCHEDULE OF ACTIVITIES
TUESDAY, 21st OCTOBER
10:30am. “Breakfast Meetings with History”. A series of conversations with Joseph Pérez, Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences. “Charles V, the Lucky Heir”. After the event in the Casa de los Hevia mansion, where Charles V spent the night in 1517, the laureate and group of participants will travel to Tazones Harbour, where they will be received by the president of the “First landing of Charles V” Cultural Association.

12 noon. Joaquín S. Lavado Tejón, aka Quino, Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities, will take part in a meeting with schoolchildren from 3 to 12 years old of the following schools: Fozaneldi (Oviedo), La Milagrosa (Oviedo) and El Bibio (Gijón) at Fozaneldi School. The schoolchildren will show the laureate a sample of their work based on Quino’s characters.

7:30pm “Mafaldologists Gathering”. Tribute to Joaquín S. Lavado Tejón, aka Quino, Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities. The event will be hosted by Álex Grijelmo, Jury member for the Prince of Asturias Award for Literature. It will feature journalists Mara Torres and Marta Ferrer, writer and translator Rodrigo Fresán and cartoonists Gallego & Rey, Peridis and Puebla. There will also be a performance by the “Petit Pop” pop group.
This event will have a hearing induction loop system for people with hearing impairment.
Two tickets per person may be collected from the right-hand box office at the Campoamor Theatre from 6:00pm on 15th October onwards. Filarmónica Theatre (Oviedo).
7:30pm Meeting with Caddy Adzuba, Prince of Asturias Award for Concord. Screening of the film “Pourquoi?” by Ouka Leele, Jury member for the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts. The event will be chaired by journalist Angels Barceló.
This event will have a sign language interpreter for people with hearing impairment and simultaneous translation.
Two tickets per person may be collected from the “Casa Municipal de Cultura” in Avilés from 16th October on. Palacio Valdés Theatre (Avilés).
WEDNESDAY, 22nd OCTOBER
9:00am. Breakfast meeting with Avelino Corma, Prince of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research.
10:30am “Breakfast Meetings with History”. A series of conversations with Joseph Pérez, Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences. “Statesmen”: from Cisneros to Jovellanos. The event will be preceded by a brief visit to Jovellanos’ study.
Admission limited to 50 people. Tickets by strict order of registration on the www.fpa.es website from 13th October on. The Jovellanos Birthplace Museum (Gijón).
11:00am. Roundtable with Avelino Corma, Mark E. Davis and Galen D. Stucky.

1:00pm. “Quino by Mafalda” Exhibition. The exhibition will be open between 22nd October and 29th November. University of Oviedo Historic Building Cloister (Oviedo).
1:00pm-3:00pm. Workshop entitled “Soups for Mafalda”, with Quino, Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities, and the participation of chefs belonging to the Restaurant Association for the Promotion of Asturian Cuisine, in search of the recipe Mafalda would like.

5:00pm. Avelino Corma, Mark E. Davis and Galen D. Stucky, Prince of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research. Exhibition entitled “Images that have chemistry. Science as a catalyst of progress”. San Francisco Park (Oviedo). Open to the public from 22nd to 27th October.
6:15pm. Working meeting between Caddy Adzuba, Prince of Asturias Award for Concord, and representatives from various associations and groups related to the sphere of Women and Cooperation.
Admission limited to the associations only. Women’s meeting centre, La Arena Municipal Centre, Gijón.
7:30pm. “Sentences in Black and White”, a meeting between John Banville, Prince of Asturias Award for Literature, and members of book clubs from Asturias, Galicia and Cantabria. The event will be chaired by Argentine writer Rodrigo Fresán.
Admission limited to book club members. Jovellanos Theatre (Gijón).
7:30pm. Fulbright Program, Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation. Roundtable entitled “Fulbright: a people-based bridge between societies and cultures”. The event, chaired by director of The Huffington Post Montserrat Domínguez, will feature economist Agustin Maravall, pianist Sylvia Torán and Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FFSB) members Tom Healy (president), Mark Alexander and Gabriel Guerra-Mondragón.
This event will have a sign language interpreter for people with hearing impairment and simultaneous translation.

THURSDAY, 23th OCTOBER
9:30am. Breakfast meeting. Avelino Corma, Mark E. Davis and Galen D. Stucky, Prince of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research, will hold a meeting with lecturers and researchers.

10:30am. “Breakfast Meetings with History”. A series of conversations with Joseph Pérez, Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences. “Of Jews and Inquisitions”. The event will commences symbolically in Plaza Porlier, where one of the gateways to Oviedo’s Jewish Quarter once stood, and will subsequently be held in the Historical Building Library of the University of Oviedo, whose founder, Fernando de Valdés Salas, was an inquisitor and where two editions of the 1553 Ferrara Bible are kept.

12 noon. Meeting between John Banville, Prince of Asturias Award for Literature, and students.

12:30pm. Visit by Joseph Pérez to the Principality of Asturias Regional Parliament (Oviedo).

1:00pm. Fulbright Program, Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation. Briefing for students.
Free admission until all seats are taken. Polytechnic School of Engineering Campus (Gijón).
5:30pm. Exhibition entitled “From the Ground Up”, on the work of Frank O. Gehry, Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts, in Spain. Sample of 11 models, photographs, videos and 30 personal sketches of Gehry’s work in Spain.
The exhibition will be open between 24th October and 12th January 2015.
Debate entitled “Architecture: the future, in construction” between Frank O. Gehry, 2014 Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts, and Rafael Moneo, 2012 Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts. The event will be chaired by architect and Jury member for the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts Benedetta Tagliabue.

7:00pm. “Starting to Run”. Talk by Mary Wittenberg, director of the New York City Marathon, Prince of Asturias Award for Sports, which will also feature testimonials from athletes who have each won the race on two occasions, Tegla Loroupe and Germán Silva.
This event will have a sign language interpreter for people with hearing impairment.

SATURDAY, 25th OCTOBER
11:00am. The New York City Marathon, Prince of Asturias Award for Sports. 1st “Big Apple” Fun Run, 5-km race. With the participation of athletes Abel Antón, Fabián Roncero, Alberto Juzdado, Martín Fiz and José Manuel García, members of the Spanish marathon team bestowed with the 1997 Prince of Asturias Award for Sports, Tegla Loroupe (Kenya), Germán Silva (Mexico) and Alessandra Aguilar (Spain).
Gijón, 11:00am.
Start line: Hermanos Castro Park.
Finish line: Former Municipal Fish Market.
