Les Luthiers

Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities 2017

At its meeting in Oviedo, the Jury for the 2017 Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities, composed of José Antonio Álvarez Gundín, Luis María Anson Oliart, Alberto Edgardo Barbieri, Juan Barja de Quiroga Losada, César Bona García, Adela Cortina Orts, Taciana Fisac Badell, Santiago González Suárez, Emilio Lledó Íñigo, Emilio Morenatti Fernández, Benigno Pendás García, Diana Sorensen, José Antonio Vera Gil, chaired by Víctor García de la Concha and with Alberto Anaut González acting as secretary, has decided to confer the 2017 Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities on the Argentinian group Les Luthiers.

Arising half a century ago in a university setting, this group is a leader in communicating Spanish American culture from the standpoint of artistic creation and humour.

The original way they deal with language, use musical instruments and perform on stage attracts hundreds of thousands of spectators from all generations, enabling Les Luthiers to provide a critical reflection of contemporary society and serve as a symbol of freedom.
