Statement by Reinhold Messner on being granted the 2018 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports

“It’s a great honour to me to get the prestigious Princess of Asturias Award for Sport together with Krzysztof Wielicki and with great pleasure I will attend the ceremony which will take place in Oviedo.”

Statement by Krzysztof Wielicki on being granted the 2018 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports

“I am very grateful for being awarded the Princess of Asturias Award in the Sport category. I am familiar with the fact that it is a very prestigious prize, which is acknowledged only to the most distinguished artists, creators, scientists, writers and sportsmen. It is a great honor and distinction for me.

I would like to thank the members of the Awards Committee who have voted for me and who have appreciated Alpinism, the sport which I represent together with the jointly awarded Himalayan mountaineer Reinhold Messner.

I would also like to thank the Committee for being accepted into the group of formerly awarded splendid sportsmen, including Carl Lewis, Michael Schumacher, Rafael Nadal or Iker Casillas.

It will be an enormous pleasure and honor for me to accept the award myself from The King and Queen of Spain in Oviedo in October .”
